Weekly Update from Dogwise: Training memoirs |
|
Dear Dogwise Customer,
Last week we talked about the surge in the number of memoirs written by authors that focus on the human-animal bond or the relationship between the author and his or her dog(s). These books - while they may shed light on certain aspects of training - do not really have that as their focus. However, there have also been some excellent training books that in many ways mirror a memoir in that they document how an author learned to become a more effective trainer - usually working with a challenging dog (or dolphin) - or through the realization over time that the training method they had been using in the past needed to be overhauled. We have four books that fit the label of training memoir and make for not only an interesting read but an educational one as well in the field of training:
- Bringing Light to Shadow by Pam Dennison. Pam's open and honest diary/memoir of her two year effort to rehabilitate an aggressive Border Collie and turn him into a reliable companion and competitor. This is a very compelling book to read. Our Book of the Week through March 3rd, 20% off at $15.96.
- The Thinking Dog by Gail Fisher. This book chronicles Gail's journey as she worked to crossover from traditional training methods to clicker training. You will get extra insights into the process as you see how Gail experienced them - and you may find yourself identifying what she went through.
- Lads Before the Wind by Karen Pryor. This memoir by the leader of the clicker training movement covers the years Karen learned her craft working with dolphins and other marine mammals in Hawaii. While this book is truly a memoir, some people consider this to be the most valued training book they have ever read.
- Shaping Success by Susan Garrett. Susan's work with a Border Collie named Buzzy is documented in one or our most popular agility training books. One reviewer notes that Susan was willing to share her mistakes as well as her successes and we think this style of writing will make it easier for you as the reader to learn from her experiences.
Our product feature this week is the line we are carrying from Dog Is Good. We are carrying their greeting cards and stickers which we found to be fun products to add to our inventory. The tasteful designs, witty notations and attractive colors let others know that we/you are truly "dog people" - best of breed!
Newest books & products:
- Naturvet Enzymes and Probiotocs - 4 OZ by NaturVet. NaturVet Enzymes and Probiotics are a concentrated enzyme blend derived from vegetable sources. Contains a source of live/viable naturally-occurring microorganisms recommended to help support a healthy digestive tract.
- Addison's Disease in Dogs by Stephanie Kenrose. Learn about the symptoms of Addison's disease, the recent treatments, cost reducing strategies for medications, and gather enough information so that you can ask specific questions at your next veterinarian appointment.
- Cushing's Disease in Dogs by Stephanie Kenrose. This informative and educational book gives you the vital information you need to know about Cushing's Disease and the knowledge you need to be an informed treatment partner..
