Weekly Update from Dogwise: Empowerment Training

Dear Dogwise Customer,

We are very pleased to announce the arrival of James O'Heare's latest book, Empowerment Training. To give you some feel for the book, the subtitle is "Training for Creativity, Persistence, Industriousness, Resilience & Behavioral Well-Being." This book is designed for those of you with a solid knowledge of canine behaviors and like O'Heare's other books it is not light reading - but well worth the effort. Simply put, "empowerment" relates to a dog's ability to have more power and control over its environment. Not in a negative fashion, but rather "the process by which (dogs) acquire behaviors patterns that effectively and efficiently contact reinforcers and avoid or escape adversives." In other words, these dogs are capable of operating on one's environment - that is what a trainer who uses operant conditioning with their dogs wants as an end-result, what Gail Fisher terms a "thinking dog."

Speaking of operant conditioning, we have been able to get our hands on Bob Bailey's classic DVD Patient Like the Chipmunks which we have not had access to for many years. This classic DVD recounts the history of the development of operant conditioning techniques with animals featuring many of the pioneers (including Bob himself) who made such a contribution to modern dog training during the 1940s and 1950s. By the way, Bob Bailey will be a featured speaker at the IAABC Conference in Waverly, Rhode Island April 1-3. Our book booth will be there throughout the conference.

We have some more new Ebooks to tell you about this week. Paul Owens, the original "dog whisperer," has agreed to let us carry three of his popular titles as Ebooks. They are:
Our Book of the Week through March 30th is another great book that we just ended up having too many in stock: Trish King's Parenting Your Dog, marked down 25% to $14.96.

Newest books & products:

  • Fox 40 Electronic Whistle With Wrist Lanyard by Fox 40. This electronic whistle is loud and consistent every time! A great tool for dogs in the field. • One Good Dog by Susan Wilson. Acclaimed author Susan Wilson brings us a touching yet unblinkingly authentic tale of loss and rediscovery, of true friendship and learning what's truly important in life.
  • Started Early, Took My Dog CD by Kate Atkinson. Retired police detective Tracy Waterhouse leads a quiet, ordered life--until she cares for a young child. Meanwhile, Jackson Brodie, the beloved detective from "Case Histories," rescues an abused dog. Jackson is about to learn, along with Tracy, that no good deed goes unpunished.
