Thanks to the customers who told us we should carry When Species Meet by Donna Haraway. More than just a book about the relationships between dogs and/or other domesticated animals with humans, Donna explores the concept of what she terms "companion species," dogs and humans being the most prominent. Companion species can experience a phenomenon called "isopraxis" when they are both finely attuned to each other working towards some goal - like a rider and a horse when show jumping - or as the author tries to achieve with her Aussie "Cayenne" doing agility. Warning - this is not an easy book to read, it is quite academic in style - but worth it if you really focus on what she is saying.
We are very happy to see an Agility DVD focusing on the very large and the very small breeds - you know, the ones you don't usually see at Agility trials. Training The Extreme Dogs DVD featuring Sandy Rogers fills this big gap in the information available on Agility.
A couple new toy/training tools from our friends at Katie's Bumpers are in stock this week. First is the Bottle Tracker which comes in assorted colors. This heavy duty training tool is designed to allow you to put a scent item contained in a plastic bottle into the Bottle Tracker, and then toss, hide, or hang it in a tree or bush. Can be used for retrieving, scent recognition, search and rescue training, and contra-band training. Second is the Jilly Bean a fun fetch squeaker toy made of fire hose material that our office dog Lola - a champion chewer - loves, but has not been able to destroy. Looks like it will be a winner!
