Katenna, who many of you know from her work with the Amercian Humane Assocation and APDT, approached us several months ago with an idea to write a book to help dog owners to select the right trainer for their dogs. While there are no statistics on this that we know of, we suspect that many owners - once they decide to employ a trainer - don't spend a lot of time making the decision about who to hire. A trainer is a trainer, right? I'll just ask a friend or pick up a flyer in my vet's office and go from there. Unfortunately, making a poor hiring decision when it comes to picking a trainer can be disastrous for a dog, not to mention the owner. Fetching the Perfect Dog Trainer - Getting the Best for You and Your Dog provides the person looking for a dog trainer the insights and knowledge he or she needs to make a good decision. As with any hiring decision, knowledge is power. Katenna advocates interviewing all prospective trainers and provides a list of questions to ask as well as doing on-site visits and watching to see if the trainer does what he says he will. She also reviews the red flags to watch for such as the trainer who advocates long after the fact punishment as the way to correct problem behaviors. And she provides the reader with enough information about how dogs learn and training techniques so that the person watching a trainer at work can make an informed decision about whether or not the trainer's methods are likely to be not only humane but effective. For you trainers, this book should be valuable in that it might help you re-think or tweak how you interact with increasingly sophisticated dog owners.

For those of you have been on vacation or hiding under a rock for some reason, this new book is flying off our shelves as word gets out about this wonderful part memoir/part training book that is striking such a chord with trainers and dog enthusiasts.
New this week from our friends at Karen Pryor's Sunshine Books is Puppy Start Right - Foundation Training for the Companion Dog by Kenneth and Debbie Martin. While there are a lot of new puppy training books on the market, this is one of the most comprehensive and well thought out books we have seen in recent years, one that should appeal to people willing to put in the time to become well informed about all aspects of behavior and training a puppy. Our kudos to both authors and the publisher!
