For long time readers of these newsletters, you would be right if you think this is a subject we turn to often. The behaviors we all see from a lack of early socialization, often in the form of fear and reactivity, are usually difficult to deal with once they become part of an older dog's way of coping with the world. And it's probably safe to assume that a lack of effort on the part of the owner to socialize a dog early on may mean the dog won't receive the benefits of daily walks and attention later in life as well. We have a wide variety of books and DVDs on both the benefits of and how to socialize a dog that you can recommend to clients including:
DVDs from Jane Killion, notably. Puppy Culture - the Powerful First 12 Weeks and The Puppy Party: Fun - Enriching - Safe.
After You Get Your Puppy by Ian Dunbar.
