Weekly Update: Challenge Your Brain, Expand Your Horizons

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Just like you raise your criteria while training your dog to make him excel, sometimes it's good to do the same for yourself. We carry a number of titles which - frankly - are pretty darn challenging to read and in some cases make you think about your own behavior as well as the behavior of other people and other types of animals in addition to dogs. Here are four of our favorite "challenging books" that can help move you to the next level of knowledge and skills:

  • Animal Training by Ken Ramirez. Seeing how zoo animals are trained and managed humanely can be a real eye opener for dog trainers. After all, it's pretty tough to try to short cut teaching a behavior to an elephant compared to some dogs. This popular title focuses on training of all types of animals with the goal of success through positive reinforcement. Caution here - the book is about the size of a large city phone book!
  • The Science and Technology of Dog Training by James O'Heare. Do you want to make sure that your work with dogs is based on the science of behavior rather than myths or anecdotes? His book can sharpen your skills and expand your knowledge base in your chosen career as a professional dog trainer.
  • Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training (Vol 3) by Steven Lindsay. Lindsay's textbooks have been required reading by certification groups for dog trainers. You will feel like you are back in college (a good thing, right?) as you work your way through the information - but of course this time, its a subject you love rather than something you had to take. That's the best kind of challenge.
  • Domestic Dog Cognition and Behavior - The Scientific Study of Canis familiaris by Alexandra Horowitz. Thinking back to college again, keeping up on research found in academic, peer-reviewed journals was something many of us dreaded. Charts, footnotes, illustrations, abstracts... But again, maybe not so hot when studying macro-economics, but pretty cool when discovering the latest research on dog behavior. This set of articles chosen by Alexandra Horowitz makes great, but perhaps challenging reading. And like certain textbooks its not cheap - no worries there, we are offering this title at $125.00, this is the lowest price you will find this title, while supplies last!

Just a reminder that our Dogwise Publishing back-list sale is ending at the end of February - thirteen older great books priced at only $3.00 or $5.00.

Newest books & products:

  • Fetch More Dollars for Your Dog Training Business by John Visconti. Dog trainers generally don’t think of themselves as salespeople—many in fact recoil at the thought! However, when you define selling as the process of communicating the benefits that your services can provide to owners and their dogs, you realize that you must be an effective salesperson to have a successful business.
  • The Social Dog: Behavior and Cognition by Juliane Kaminski and Sarah Marshall-Pescini. Dogs are being studied in comparative cognitive sciences as well as genetics, ethology, and many more areas. As the number of published studies increases, this book aims to give the reader an overview of the state of the art on dog research, with an emphasis on social behavior and socio-cognitive skills.
  • The Science and Technology of Animal Training: Study Guide by James O'Heare. Study Questions book is a workbook of assignments/study questions that may be used in conjunction with the The Science and Technology of Animal Training either on one’s own or if required in a course.
