Weekly Update from Dogwise: Chase! by Clarissa von Reinhardt

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Dogwise Publishing is pleased to announce the release of Chase! - Managing Your Dog's Predatory Instincts by Clarissa von Reinhardt. As many of you have likely experienced, a dog whose prey drive is strong usually loves to chase things - cats, squirrels, deer, children, bikes, cars - the list can be endless. While it may provide a fun adrenaline rush for the dog, it can be dangerous for him, not to mention the "prey" he is chasing after, as well as for you. Because this is an instinctive behavior - and a very strong one in certain breeds or individual dogs - there are no quick and easy solutions to keep your dog from engaging in a chase when the opportunity presents itself.

Because of the difficulty this behavior presents for owners, the temptation to fall for supposedly easy and foolproof methods to deal with it can be strong. When they fail, owners sometimes resort to keeping their dogs chained up, never allowing the dog the freedom of being off-leash, or just putting up with it along with the separated shoulders they may suffer when they walk their dogs. What we really like about Clarissa's approach is that she admits up front this behavior is not subject to an easy solution, and you can't expect to totally extinguish the behavior (read the story of Ferengi at the end of the book for an example of this). However, there are things you can do, most of which revolve around rewarding your dog for paying attention and focusing on you, therefore building a bond between the two of you that is stronger than the urge to chase a squirrel. Taking what Clarissa will teach you how to take "Communicative Walks" where you actually seek to engage your dog instead of ignoring him. The "Sausage Tree" technique is a unique idea where you plant some treats on the route of your walk ahead of time so that the dog learns that by staying with you he may find a wonderful surprise. Finally, teaching your dog to automatically sit in the presence of potential prey is, as Clarissa terms it, the "piece de resistance." All of these in addition to common sense management techniques and using the proper equipment will give you the best chance you can have to counter the urge your dog may have to chase. Note we say "counter," not "completely extinguish," - that would imply "foolproof" which no one can guarantee with the strength of this instinctive behavior in some dogs! We are sure that this book will take its place as required reading for dog trainers and enthusiasts.
