Weekly Update from Dogwise: The Canine Thyroid Epidemic

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Dogwise Publishing is pleased to announce the imminent arrival (within the next 24 hours!) of The Canine Thyroid Epidemic - Answers You Need for Your Dog by Jean Dodds and Diana Laverdure. Many of you are very familiar with the work of Jean Dodds through her research and the articles she has written on a variety of topics relating to dog health in both academic journals and popular magazines as well as through Hemopet, the first nonprofit blood bank and testing program for animals. In this valuable new book, Jean and Diana explore why canine thyroid disease is so often misdiagnosed or left untreated. The answer lies in part because the symptoms of canine thyroid disease are so varied (both physical and behavioral) and many vets have not been taught the proper way to test for it. The tragedy in all this is that most thyroid problems can be treated successfully once they are properly diagnosed. This book will arm you with what you need to know about thyroid disease so that you have a much better chance of recognizing it and then how to work with your vet to get the proper treatment. You need to play the role of your dog's health advocate in any event, but it is very important in situations where thyroid problems are suspected. Thanks so much to Jean and Diana for writing such a valuable book for all of us who care so much for our dogs!

Staying on the same subject of treatments for specific disease, two recent additions (albeit in less detail than Canine Thyroid) will help owners dealing with Addison's Disease and Cushing's Disease in their dogs:

While books that focus in on specific diseases are valuable, most dog owners should also have an up-to-date home reference guide that cover the spectrum of medical problems you might encounter. We recently began importing such a book from England that we think is really great: Veterinary Advice for Dog Owners - A Complete Home Reference Guide by Dick Lane. If you are looking for a book to fill that role, we recommend you consider this book. Our Book of the Week through April 13th, 20% off at $15.96.

Our Ebook selection continues to grow including one of our all time best sellers by Pam Reid. New this week are:

Newest books & products:

  • Your Dog is Your Mirror - The Emotional Capacity of Our Dogs and Ourselves by Kevin Behan. Kevin believes that dogs don't respond to their owners based on what their owners think, say, or do; they respond to what the owner feels. While most think that dogs can perceive human emotions, are they actually "driven by them"?
  • Ami Ami Dog - Seriously Cute Crochet by Mitsuki Hoshi. This Amigurumi handbook is filled with adorable photographs of puppies and easy-to-follow crochet patterns to help you create them.
  • Sniff the Dog Movie DVD by Barry Stone. Sniff is a hybrid of fiction and documentary - loads of canine educational material delivered in a humorous, entertaining package. (Think of a National Geographic video gone comedy crazy.)
Thanks from all us at Dogwise.
