Weekly Update from Dogwise: Socializing Puppies |

Dear Dogwise Customer,
A common question we get here at Dogwise is "Do you have a book or DVD on Socialization?" Interestingly enough we do not have any one book or DVD that is totally devoted to the awareness and the importance of proper socialization of puppies. That is not to say that there isn't good information on socialization available, you just have to do a little digging to find it. While there are literally dozens of training books that include great tips for socializing a puppy (or an older dog), here are a few to consider that will give you great insights into the subject:
- After Your Get Your Puppy by Ian Dunbar. This book (and almost anything else written by Ian) is probably the most complete guide to socializing a puppy you can find by the person who first brought the subject to the attention of dog trainers and dog enthusiasts over twenty years ago. - Perfect Puppy in 7 Days by Sophia Yin. This very popular puppy training book includes an excellent chapter full of good socialization tips. This book is also available as an Ebook.
- Teaching a Puppy Headstart Class DVD by Terry Ryan. Terry Ryan is another one of the pioneers along with Ian Dunbar in terms of ways to socialize puppies. One of means to get your puppy socialized is to attend a "puppy headstart" class - and if you are a trainer and want to know how to work socialization into your classes - seeing it in action in this DVD is a great way to learn more.

The Breeder's Guide to Raising Superstar Dogs by Jerry Hope. Responsible breeders begin the socialization process (some use the term "imprinting" as well) for very young pups before they go to their new homes. In fact, a puppy buyer should inquire as to what the breeder has done in terms of socialization before bringing the pup home. For information on the breeder's role, Jerry's book stands alone.

Giving Your Puppy a Choice - Modern Socialization and Behavior Training DVD by Grisha Stewart. The author of the best selling book Behavior Adjustment Training takes on the issue of how to not overwhelm a puppy during a socialization program. One of the few downsides of socializing a puppy is when you inadvertently cause the pup undue stress or fear when exposing him to new people and things. This DVD will show you ways to minimize that happening during the first few critical months of life.
