Weekly Update from Dogwise: More Resources for Animal Assisted Therapy

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Years ago anyone who was interested in doing therapy dog work was pretty much on their own in terms of having access to books and DVDs that could give them guidance. Fortunately, as research has shown the benefits of using dogs in animal assisted therapy, more and more resources have become available and the situations in which dogs are used to benefit people are limited only by one's imagination. Dogs in courtrooms to help calm people in stressful situations or having youngsters read to dogs to improve their self-confidence are just two of the more recent examples. Here are some recommendations for you if you are considering trying therapy dog work or if you just want to improve your knowledge:

  • Lending a Helping Paw - A Guide to Animal Assisted Therapy DVD by Trish McConnell. A new seminar DVD that is a must-see for anyone interested in doing therapy dog work.
  • A Dog Who's Always Welcome by Lorie Long. This book has a major focus on socializing and training prospective therapy dogs.
  • The Handler Factor by Ann Howie. Remember, you are truly a therapy dog team - don't forget the handler factor!
  • 101 Creative Ideas for Animal Assisted Therapy by Stacy Grover. Your dog is trained and you are too - have any good ideas about what you are going to do at the nursing home? This book can help.
  • Therapy Dogs by Kathy Diamond Davis. This is this most complete book on the market about training a therapy dog and dealing with the institutions that you want to work with. Our Book of the Week, 25% off through May 9th at only $14.96.

We have added Robert Cole's You Be the Judge series to our growing selection of Ebooks. Test your knowledge and get a feel for some of the key points involved in judging dogs.

Newest books & products:
  • Your Dog's Golden Years - A Manual for Senior Dog Care by Jennifer Kachnic. Throughout this book, you will be guided by 20 canine professionals from around the country who reveal the stages and ailments dog experience. They share therapies, treatments and simple techniques for the senior dog that embrace both veterinary and holistic practices.
  • Giant George: Life with the World's Biggest Dog by by Dave Nasser. With his big blue eyes and soulful expression, George was the irresistible runt of the litter. But Dave and Christie Nasser's "baby" ended up being almost five feet tall, seven feet long, and 245 pounds. Eager to play, and boisterous to the point of causing chaos, this big Great Dane was scared of water, scared of dogs a fraction of his size and, most of all, scared of being alone.
  • Clix Retriever - The Retriever is the ultimate retrieval training device designed to aid with recall training. The loop of rope makes the Retriever easy to throw long distances and once your dog has brought the Retriever back to you, you can quickly and easily unzip the secure treat compartment within to reward your dog’s good behavior. The material and design of the Retriever makes this an essential, stylish and durable retrieval tool.

Thanks from all us at Dogwise.
