Observing Dog Encounters

Dear Dogwise Customer,

It's good to know that the national media is recognizing the importance of being able to interpret dog body language, especially when dogs are interacting with each other. There was a nice, albeit brief, article in the most recent Weekend Wall Street Journal that gave a nice overview on this subject and we were pleased that they mentioned the work of Turid Rugaas (too bad that did not cite her book, but we will take care of that below...). With the growing popularity of dog parks and with more people hiking/walking with their dogs (often off leash), the likelihood of dogs encountering other dogs in what often turn out to be uncontrolled situations is high. Unfortunately many owners don't recognize what is going on in these encounters and may overreact or even react unnecessarily making matters worse. What may look innocent may be signs of arousal but what may look scary may in fact just be play. Here are some resources you can turn to for answers about how to know what is happening in these situations:

  • The Nosework Dog Performance Journal by Fred Helfers. This journal was created from professional record keeping and performance logs that the author has designed and utilized with over 30 years' experience in the training and handling of professional detection dog teams.
  • Professional Applications of Animal Assisted Interventions: Dogwwod Doga (2nd Edition) by Melissa Winkle. Dogwood Doga is the first book in a series that offers an occupational therapists perspective on having a canine co-therapist or co-educator work with clients, patients or students to reach functional goals including health maintenance, neuromusculoskeletal and motor skills, sensory and cognitive functions, communication and interaction skills, and more.
  • Professional Applications of Animal Assisted Interventions: Blue Dog Book (2nd Edition) by Melissa Winkle. The Blue Dog Collection offers practitioners and educators valuable discussions about screening people for participation, screening dogs for the job, intervention goals, precautions and professional responsibilities. Written by an occupational therapist that also trains dogs, this fully illustrated book describes ideas for all ages and abilities, and is useful for many professions within the interdisciplinary team.
