Weekly Update: Some Heavyweight Titles

Dear Dogwise Customer,

The field of animal cognition and behavior - much of which can be related to dogs - is growing rapidly with lots of new research being published. There have been several successful books that have come out designed for a broad audience including (Inside of a Dog by Alexandra Horowitz and a The Genius of Dogs by Brian Hare which are two of the best). Now we are starting to see books written in a more academic style for serious students of the subject and for folks who work with animals on a professional basis - i.e., many of you. Two of these "heavier" books (not so much weight but in terms of information) that have reached us recently are:

  • Animal Cognition - Evolution, Behavior and Cognition, 2nd Ed. by Clive Wynne (an APDT speaker this fall) and Monique Udell. This is a really great book filled with useful information for dog trainers and behaviorists and has references and citations to other works that you will find incredibly valuable.
  • Aggressive Behavior in Dogs, 2nd Ed. by James O'Heare. This book replaces the first edition and takes a behavioral approach to dealing with and treating aggressive dogs that can be used by dog trainers who take on such cases.

We are glad to welcome our friends at Alpine Publishing to our Ebook family. Alpine has been publishing great dog books for many years and we now have a nice selection of Ebooks from them including:

Newest books & products:

  • Thundershirt Calming Caps by Thundershirt. The Calming Cap is a wonderful tool for easing a dog's anxiety in high-stress situations. The calming cap reduces visual stimuli and helps dogs to remain comfortable, overcome fearfulness and increase their confidence. The single-panel sheet fabric window does not blind dogs, but simply filters their view. They come in three sizes.
  • Our Faithful Companions: Exploring the Essence of Our Kinship with Animals by Aubrey H. Fine. This book celebrates our affiliation with the animals that share our lives. Dr. Fine thoroughly explores why we create a bond with our companion animals and the role that animals have in promoting a warmer and kinder household. Throughout the book he has included testimonials, powerful anecdotes of people who have been affected by their interactions with animals, as well as scientific evidence to support the importance of the bond.
  • Tricks and Games to Teach Your Dog: 75+ Fun Indoor & Outdoor Activities for Your Dog by Sophie Collins and Suellen Dainty. Who doesn't want to spend more time playing?! Tricks and Games to Teach Your Dog is the how-to book for dog owners looking to improve their "fun factor" in their dogs' eyes. Author Sophie Collins, assisted by Suellen Dainty, promises that any owner of a dog--no matter what age, breed, activity level, size or personality--can transform his pooch into an accomplished performer in brief daily five-minute training sessions.
