Weekly Update: Two Great New Books!

Dear Dogwise Customer,

We are very pleased to announce the arrival of two great new books, both of which break new ground to the benefit of dog trainers and students of canine behavior everywhere. They are:

  • Domestic Dog Cognition and Behavior - The Scientific Study of Canis familiaris edited by Alexandra Horowitz. While our knowledge of domestic dog behavior has certainly expanded in recent years, what has been lacking all too often is that the theories put forth by various authors/speakers have not always been subject to the rigors of scientific study. In other words, theories are advanced too often on the basis of anecdotal evidence or results which cannot be replicated by other researchers. This book presents ground breaking studies by a number of the leading researchers in the field, backed by data that you can trust and which has been subject to peer reviews. The contributors, in addition to Alexandra, are some of the leading experts in the field including James Serpell, Marc Bekoff, Adam Miklosi, Claudia Fugazza, Julie Hecht and a number more who will become more noted as their studies get more exposure. Hopefully the publication of this book will spur on more research using scientific studies and methods. Unfortunately, this book was published by an academic/textbook publisher and as such is way way overpriced - $189.95 if you can believe that. We have ordered 50 of them and - because we think this is an important book - are willing to sell them to you for $149.95. We don't think you can buy it cheaper.....

  • The Science and Technology of Dog Training by James O'Heare. This is a book that is designed for both students of dog training as well as for professional dog trainers. While many trainers are exposed to and gain some expertise with using the better known techniques of what James calls "non-coercive" dog training, many would benefit from a more thorough knowledge of what is exactly going on when - and what you should do - while applying more sophisticated techniques such as behavior chaining, differential reinforcement, shaping and the like. We believe that knowing the material presented in this book and understanding the concepts it presents should be a goal for any professional dog trainer, especially those who work on issues with dogs above and beyond basic manners training.

While not linked directly to the new Alexandra Horowitz book mentioned above, a chance to meet some of the leading behavioral experts on dogs and hear about their research is coming up soon at the SPARCS 2014 International Conference on Dog Behavior coming up in June. For details on the conference, click here. They have a great lineup of speakers including Ray Coppinger, Trish McConnell, Clive Wynne, Monique Udell and more. And, Dogwise will be there with a book booth!

Newest books & products:

  • Benes Bungee Ball Tug by Clean Run Productions LLC. Bene's Bungee Ball Tug is 21" long and designed for ball-loving dogs that also like to tug. Not only is an excellent toy for tugging, it's a great fetch toy and you can throw it very accurately in training.
  • Thundershirt Calming Caps by Thundershirt. The Calming Cap is a wonderful tool for easing a dog's anxiety in high-stress situations. The calming cap reduces visual stimuli and helps dogs to remain comfortable, overcome fearfulness and increase their confidence. The single-panel sheet fabric window does not blind dogs, but simply filters their view. They come in three sizes.
  • Our Faithful Companions: Exploring the Essence of Our Kinship with Animals by Aubrey H. Fine. This book celebrates our affiliation with the animals that share our lives. Dr. Fine thoroughly explores why we create a bond with our companion animals and the role that animals have in promoting a warmer and kinder household. Throughout the book he has included testimonials, powerful anecdotes of people who have been affected by their interactions with animals, as well as scientific evidence to support the importance of the bond.
