Weekly Update: New From the Coppingers!

Dear !*FIRSTNAME*!,

We are very pleased to announce the arrival of a new book from Ray and Lorna Coppinger titled What Is a Dog? We understand that this book has been in the works for many years, but its well worth the wait if you really want to understand as Ken McCort states in his review “…the biology and population genetics of Canis familiarias, the niche that dogs occupy, and the problems that they face cohabiting with man.” The research done by Ray and Lorna spans the world and is incredibly fascinating. Why do 'village dogs’ from around the world look so much alike? It is what happens when natural selection takes place over generations in contrast to the artificial selection that goes on when people work to create a purebred to serve a particular role or function. And this is just one of many other equally interesting theories the Coppingers take up in this new book. The best thing is that there are now three books in print that Ray Coppinger has written, all ground-breaking. Along with What Is a Dog?, make sure you have Dogs: A New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior, and Evolution and How Dogs Work on your must-read book lists if you have not read them already.

We mentioned this book in a recent newsletter, but it has quickly become a nationwide best seller: Pit Bull - The Battle Over an American Icon by Bronwen Dickey. The nature and behavior of ‘Pit Bulls’ is a fascinating subject, especially given the not always so great a reputation they have gained, rightly or wrongly. The history of Pit Bulls in America may surprise you given how popular they were decades ago - are you old enough to remember the starring role of the Pit Bull in The Little Rascals? Trainers who work with “Pit Bulls’ know with proper training and management techniques that these dogs can make great pets - but that is not always the way they are always raised, unfortunately. This is a really great read, taking an even-handed approach to the issues, which we highly recommend.

Newest books & products:

Pet Politics: The Political and Legal Lives of Cats, Dogs, and Horses in Canada and the United States by Susan Hunter and Richard A. Brisbin Jr. The authors examine how people and governments classify three species of pets or companion animals—cats, dogs, and horses—for various degrees of legal protection. They then detail how interest groups shape the agenda for companion animal legislation and regulation, and the legislative and administrative formulation of anticruelty, kennel licensing, horse slaughter, feral and roaming cat, and breed ban policies.

Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? by Frans De Waal. What separates your mind from an animal’s? Maybe you think it’s your ability to design tools, your sense of self, or your grasp of past and future - all traits that have helped us define ourselves as the planet’s preeminent species. But in recent decades, these claims have eroded, or even been disproven outright, by a revolution in the study of animal cognition. Take the way octopuses use coconut shells as tools; elephants that classify humans by age, gender, and language; or Ayumu, the young male chimpanzee at Kyoto University whose flash memory puts that of humans to shame. Based on research involving crows, dolphins, parrots, sheep, wasps, bats, whales, and of course chimpanzees and bonobos, Frans de Waal explores both the scope and the depth of animal intelligence. He offers a firsthand account of how science has stood traditional behaviorism on its head by revealing how smart animals really are, and how we’ve underestimated their abilities for too long.

Remember Me? Loving and Care for A Dog with Canine Cognitive Dysfunction by Eileen Anderson. Remember Me? is a guidebook for owners of dogs who are losing their mental faculties as they age, and the story of a dog and owner who retained their bond through this most difficult situation. If you have an aging dog, Remember Me? will give you the information you need to weather the difficult condition and give your dog the most fulfilling life possible.
