Weekly Update from Dogwise: Minding Your Business
|
|
Dear Dogwise Customer,
Dogwise Publishing is very pleased to announce the release of Veronica Boutelle and Rikke Jorgensen's Minding Your Dog Business - A Practical Guide to Business Success for Dog Professionals, available in both book and E-book formats. This book makes a great complement to Veronica's How to Run a Dog Business (our Book of the Week - 20% off, $15.96) which has helped many would-be dog business entrepreneurs get their dog training, walking, sitting or daycare businesses set up and started off on the right paw. And while that is a major achievement in itself, building a business with staying power that can succeed over the long run is the ultimate test for a dog pro. Why? Simply because the environment you operate in is changing constantly. Ten years ago web sites were a novelty for businesses - now they are a necessity. Five years ago the idea of social networking was barely on the horizon. And during the past two years, the country has experienced what many economists have called the "Great Recession." So how do you keep your business on track? Some of it involves good old-fashioned business practices - knowing your market, knowing your customers, having a well defined niche, building a brand, and having good (and updated) policies. Some of it involves educating yourself in new ways of doing business including email newsletters, blogs, maybe even Facebook and Twitter. And, lastly, having plans that can help you through the lean times. Dog pros have a real great resource here in these two books. Remember, you can be the most talented dog trainer in the world, but if you want to make a living at it you need to know how to run - and maintain - a business!
New this week is Dogs - Domestication and the Development of a Social Bond by Darcy Morey. This is an academic study of the evolution of the domestic dog and the how the social bond between dogs and people has developed over time. We know from the research from experts like Ray Coppinger that the domestication process and the growth of the social bond between dogs and people are very intertwined. The one could not occur without the other. Morey is an anthropologist with an interest in forensics and brings a fresh perspective to this issue which is of growing interest to many in the world of dogs.
We are really pleased to announce that Andrew Darlow, author of Pet Photography 101, will be featured on the Dogwise Forums from June 14-21 to answer questions and give advice on how to take the best possible photos of your dog. For those of us who are kinda clutzy with a camera, this is a great chance to improve your photo taking skills. Bonus! The author will be giving away 3 signed copies of his book. To enter the drawing simply post a question on the forms during the week.
These Treat Bags have been really popular with our customers! They come in 9 stylish colors, these bags have one of the most convenient closing methods we've seen yet! The improved design has a strong magnetic closure for easy, one-handed operation. Three ways to carry the important training treats - with the removable waist belt, the belt clip, or the Velcro webbing loop. Lots of style, color and function for one great price.
New this week:
