Weekly Update: Viva Italia!

Dear Dogwise Customer,

No, we aren't promoting the Italian soccer team in the World Cup (although we hope they do well!), but we are very happy that our friends at Haqihana, based in Italy, have been working at producing DVDs that should be of interest to dog enthusiasts in the US. We've just received two new DVDs that we want to tell you about this week:
  • Man and Dog - An Evolving Partnership DVD featuring Raymond Coppinger. The footage on this DVD was originally produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Company and shown on PBS several years ago - so its possible you may have seen this. However, we believe that this is the only DVD available which includes this important footage, in particular an in-depth discussion with Ray Coppinger in which he presents his ground breaking theory on how dogs first became domesticated and how the relationship/partnership between people and dogs have evolved over time.
  • Nosework: Scent Discrimination DVD featuring Ann Lill Kvam and Turid Rugaas. This is the second in the series featuring Ann Lill and Turid on how to teach scent discrimination and object retrieves in an effective and fun manner for both the dog and handler. If you haven't seen it yet, you might be interested in their introductory DVD entitled Nosework: Search Games.

New! Our product feature this week is the Benes Bungee Ball Tug. The "bungee" portion of this toy is made from soft-touch nylon covering special shock cord. It is designed to act as a shock absorber between you and the dog so that you'll be more comfortable while tugging and to provide exciting resistance to the dog without you actually having to pull hard on the toy. This keeps tugging fun for the dog, but makes tugging easier on your body. Our office dogs love this toy!

Newest books & products:

  • Citizen Canine: Our Evolving Relationship with Cats and Dogs by David Grimm. In this fascinating exploration of the changing status of dogs and cats in society, pet lover and award-winning journalist David Grimm explores the rich and surprising history of our favorite companion animals. He treks the long and often torturous path from their wild origins to their dark days in the middle ages to their current standing as the most valued animals on Earth.
  • The Gift of A Gray Muzzle: Active Care for Senior Dogs DVD by Kathy Sdao, MA, ACAAB and Lori Stevens, CPDT-KA, SAMP. They have combined their decades of animal-care expertise to teach this custom-designed workshop which welcomed as participants a small group of senior dogs and their caregivers. Lori and Kathy’s goal is to empower you to joyfully and actively engage with and support your aging dog. Watch these experienced professionals share several methods to keep your dog's mind and body agile and strong.
  • Domestic Dog Cognition and Behavior: The Scientific Study of Canis Familiaris by Alexandra Horowitz. This book highlights the state of the field in the new, provocative line of research into the cognition and behavior of the domestic dog. Eleven chapters from leading researchers describe innovative methods from comparative psychology, ethology, and behavioral biology, which are combined to create a more comprehensive picture of the behavior of Canis familiaris than ever before. Introductory price of $149.95.
