Weekly Update from Dogwise: In Praise of Small Publishers
|
|
Dear Dogwise Customer,
Dogwise would not exist if there was nobody publishing good dog books. In fact, for years we were entirely at the mercy of other companies to supply us with books to sell. As some of the larger traditional publishers of dog books either went out of business or chose to focus on what we would call mass market books instead of books for you dog enthusiasts, we started our own publishing company (Dogwise Publishing) to help fill the gap. But we would be remiss to not mention (and thank) many other small publishers and individuals who self publish who also have recognized the opportunity to produce high quality works. Several noted trainers/authors like Karen Pryor, Nicole Wilde, Sue Sternberg and James O'Heare have all committed the time and resources to publish their own works and in some cases the work of others. And there are many others who have stepped up to take the risk of publishing books on their own - and we thank each and every one of them who do so.
Here are some recently self-published books that have proven successful with our customers:
This week, our featured products are some great games that everyone can enjoy... even the dog! Muttheads is the card game that humans and dogs play together, Do You Mind is an interactive game for people and their canines, and Funagle is a board game that uses voice, treats, and gestures to encourage the dog to do something. So get everyone together, pull out a game, and play with your dog!
Don't forget that Friday, June 25, is Take Your Dog to Work Day.
Newest books & products:
- Smellorama - Nose Games For Dogs by Vivane Theby. A dog is all about their sense of smell. With up to 100 times as many olfactory receptors as humans, dogs use their sense of smell to "see" and interpret their world, just as we do with our eyes. So why not increase our communication with them on their level with more nose games?
- Traveling Blind - Adventures in Vision With A Guide Dog By My Side by Susan Krieger. Great insight for anyone working with service dogs. In a series of beautifully textured stories, the author takes the reader on a fascinating journey as she travels with Teela, her lively "golden dog," through airports, city streets, and southwest desert landscapes, exploring these surroundings with changed sight.
