Weekly Update: Featured Speaker - Nicole Wilde

Dear Dogwise Customer,

We are continuing our focus this week on authors who will be speaking at the upcoming APDT Conference in Spokane in October. Nicole Wilde is the most prolific author/producer of books and DVDs of interest to dog trainers - how she puts all of this great material out, runs her own publishing company, gives seminars and updates her Facebook page regularly is pretty incredible. As you can see from the above link, her books and DVDs span a large number of subjects from how to operate a training business, to dealing with tricky problems that dog trainers face (notably separation anxiety and aggression). She will be speaking this fall on dog-to-dog play and understanding canine body language. Just one more good reason to head to the Great Northwest this fall!

Our Book of the Week actually numbers four this time - the four books are all from Temple Grandin - Animals in Translation, Animals Make Us Human, Thinking in Pictures, and The Way I See It. These books are great for taking with you on a summer vacation, enjoyable to read yet educational as well. 25% off through July 3rd.

Dogwise will be attending the Society for the Promotion of Applied Research in Canine Science (SPARCS) Conference in Redmond, WA this weekend. The SPARCS mission is an initiative to promote research and continuing education in canine science. Proceeds from the event will go towards sponsoring research grants for Graduate students and PhD candidates in the behavioral sciences and expanding the scope of their efforts in continuing education. Among the distinguished list of speakers are: Mark Bekoff, PhD, Raymond Coppinger, PhD, Michael W. Fox, PhD, Alexandra Horowitz, PhD, Kathryn Lord, PhD, Adam Miklosi, PhD, Monique Udell, PhD and Clive Wynne, PhD.

Our product feature this week is the Dog is Good Rope flyer available in Pink or Blue. Dogs of all breeds and sizes will love playing with this durable and fun-filled Rope Flyer. This brightly colored nylon and cotton rope flyer proudly features Bolo, the Dog is Good™ logo. Chase, pull, tug, fetch—these rope flyers will keep dogs active for hours, marked down 50% to only $2.50. Get yours before they are gone.

Newest books & products:

  • The Skilful Mind of the Guide Dog - Towards a Cognitive and Holistic Model of Training by Bruce Johnston. This book will be of value to dog owners and professional trainers, education and training staff of guide dog schools, students of animal and human cognition, veterinary staff, and anyone who has a curiosity about how the guide dog does its job.
  • Do As I Do: A New Training Method Based on Social Learning by Claudia Fugazza. Do as I Do is a new training method based on dogs’ social cognitive skills, particularly on their imitative ability. With this training technique dogs will learn new behaviors observing and copying their owners. During the seminar Claudia describes how to teach dogs the “imitation rule” and how to progress through the training protocol. Dogs will first be taught to imitate a small set of familiar actions (actions already trained with traditional techniques) and will then generalize this rule. At the end of the training protocol, the owners will be able to teach new behaviors to their dogs, simply showing them what to do.
  • Canine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation by M. Christine Zink & Janet B. Van Dyke. Encompassing basic science and integrated veterinary and physical therapy approaches, Canine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation is a complete resource for veterinarians, physical therapists, veterinary technicians and anyone interested in working with canine athletes or in offering rehabilitation therapy in their practice.
