Weekly Update from Dogwise: Upcoming Working Dog Conference

Dear Dogwise Customer,

We are pleased to announce that Dogwise will be represented with a booth at the upcoming Working Dog Conference (Defining, Developing and Documenting Success in Working Dogs) in Pearl River, New York Sept 7-9, 2011. Click here for more information on the conference which should be a good one featuring such speaker/authors as Rise VanFleet, Chris Zink and many more. As we approach the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks of 9/11/2001, the value of working dogs who can help in the event of disasters is increasingly well recognized. Of course, working dogs are not only limited to searching for victims in collapsed buildings, but also aid people in a variety of other fields as well. Its only fitting that this conference will be held just outside of New York City just before the 9/11 anniversary.

Some working dog related titles that may be of interest to those of you who train and handle working dogs:

  • K9 Behavior Basics - A Manual For Proven Success in Operational Service Dog Training by Resi Gerritsen, Ruud Haak and Simon Prins. We barely got this highly recommended book in stock when we immediately sold out. We are working diligently to get it back in stock (more should be here soon).
  • Canine Ergonomics: The Science of Working Dogs by edited by William Helton. This textbook (think expensive unfortunately) for advance students studying all aspects of the working dog. Ergonomics means "the study of efficiency in working environments." Thus the theme of the research articles in the book is how to improve the behavior, training and skills of working dogs. This is an incredible resource for those of you trying to advance your skills in this area.
  • Training the Disaster Search Dog by Shirley Hammond. This is our Book of the Week, discounted 25% through July 6, only $22.46. This is the most complete book on how to train dogs to search for and mark finds of people (living, not deceased) in trapped in collapsed buildings and other types of piles of rubble.

Remember our 30% off product sale(treats, toys, training tools) continues on through the upcoming Holiday weekend. And we are continuing our close out sale of AKC Breed DVDs as well. Get them before they are gone.

Newest books & products:

  • Dr. Becker's Real Food For Healthy Dogs and Cats 3rd Edition by Karen Shaw Becker and Beth Taylor. Discover a rotation plan and recipes for a meat-based diet that includes appropriate levels of vegetables, fruits, and supplements to complete the diet. Based on the ancestral diets of dogs and cats, this program has been analyzed to ensure nutritional needs are met (both AAFCO and NRC).
  • Dog Cookies - Heathly, Allergen-Free Treat Recipes For Your Dog by Martha Shops. This full-color, lavishly-illustrated book contains 35 easy-to-follow, scrumptious recipes for healthy dog treats and cookies, plus information on the use of treats in dog training, possible allergens in commercial treats, and correct storage.
  • A Pug's Tale by Alison Pace. The sequel to Pace's Pug Hill, Alison spins another mystery yarn starring her pug, Max. For the first time, Metropolitan Museum of Art restorer Hope McNeill is able to bring her pug, Max, to work. The occasion is a party for an Animals in 19th-Century Art exhibit, but the evening ends badly when a small but important painting seems to be missing. The Met needs Hope's--and Max's--help.
