One of the more fascinating and controversial issues currently in the dog training world is that of dominance. Looking at the recent works of noted authorities like Patricia McConnell , Jean Donaldson , James O'Heare and Barry Eaton, you can see that there are varying opinions on the subject. Clearly some dogs are better able in some circumstances to get access to and control of resources than others, but how does that apply in other circumstances and, perhaps more importantly, to the way you should interact with your dog and the methods of training you use. The latest authority to weigh in on this subject is Pamela Reid in a new seminar DVD entitled Dominance Theory - Are We Throwing the Baby Out With the Bathwater? Pam suggests that rather than entirely reject the dominance idea that we recognize that some sort of dominance hierarchy exists among dogs but that it should not prompt owners or trainers to adopt an "antagonistic relationship" with their dogs.
