Dear Dogwise Customer,
We carry hundreds of dog training books, the vast majority of which focus on techniques. But there is another aspect of training which is sometimes overlooked - and that is the relationship between you and your dog and how that impacts your ability to train effectively. That is the territory explored by Claudeen McAuliffe in Mindful Dog Teaching, Reflections on the Relationship We Share with our Dogs. Her focus is on teaching and relationship building rather than the "tasks" associated with training, and her key concepts are being proactive, how to engage your dog, and how to provide order and stability in your relationship with your dog. A benefit of adopting a "mindful" teaching approach is that it can resolve the unmet needs of a dog which create behavior issues. If you enjoyed reading books like For the Love a Dog by Trish McConnell or
Bones Would Rain by Suzanne Clothier, you should find this book a thought-provoking read.
As mentioned a few weeks ago, we continue to see increased demand for books on natural foods and diets in light of the pet food scare. We have several new books in this category including:
The Whole Pet Diet by Andi Brown.
The Dog Ate It: Cooking for Yourself and Your Four-Legged Friends by Linda Eckhardt and Barbara Bradley.
Natural Food Recipes for Healthy Dogs by Carol Boyle.
And lastly, here is a fun read for those long hot summer days: Anyone But You by Jennifer Cruise. A fun romantic book featuring a match making overweight Basset-Beagle mix and a recent divorcee looking for a younger man.
We will be closed for the 4th of July, open for business again on the 5th. Thanks from all of us at Dogwise.
