Weekly Update from Dogwise: It's a Dog, Not a Toaster! |
|
Dear Dogwise Customer,
Dogwise Publishing is pleased to announce the release of It's a Dog Not a Toaster - Finding Your Fun in Competitive Obedience by Diana Kerew-Shaw. We first met Diana at the Pet Writer's Conference in New York last year where she told us she had been writing columns in her local obedience club newsletter and thought they might form the foundation of a book. What intrigued us was that this was not to be strictly a training/how to work with your dog in the ring book. Rather, this was to be a book about how to enjoy the sport no matter what your goals are in working with your dog, even if you are the owner of a Basset Hound competing against an entry full of Goldens and Border Collies. We here at Dogwise share Diana's concern that the sport of Obedience (and this is true for showing dogs in general) has fallen on hard times with entries down and not enough new people coming into the sport. While some of this may be due to the poor economy, we both believe that a focus only on "winning" in Obedience sometimes blinds people to the benefits of the sport which include building a great relationship with your dog, exercise, hanging out with other dog owners (see the chapter called "We All Live in a Cult") and just plain fun. We think that anyone with any dog (mixed breeds too!) can benefit from this book whether you are an experienced Obedience person or someone who is considering entering the "Land of Obedience" for the first time.
Two books on Obedience that would complement Toaster are:
- Building Blocks for Performance 2nd Edition by Bobbie Anderson. This is a newly revised addition to one of our most popular books on Obedience, one that focuses on getting your puppy off on the right paw in competitions. This is our Book of the Week through from now through July 13th, 20% off the regular at $23.96.
- Competitive Obedience for the Small Dog by Barbara Cecil and Gerianne Darnell. You will see in Toaster that the author has become a Papillon person and that working with a small dog presents certain challenges. Luckily Barbara and Gerianne have written a book that deals exclusively for training small dogs for the Obedience ring.
Newest books & products:
- Rescuing Rover - Saving America's Dogs by Raymond Bial. Bial takes readers into the genesis of the dog overpopulation problem, covering puppy mills, pet stores, and backyard breeders, and then he profiles a local animal shelter, sharing with readers the ins and outs of daily life there. (Grades 4-7)
- Art of Raising a Puppy (Revised) by the Monks of New Skete. This new edition features new photographs throughout, along with updated chapters on play, crating, adopting dogs from shelters and rescue organizations, raising dogs in an urban environment, and the latest developments in canine health and canine behavioral theory.
- Body Language of Canine Play - How to Tell if Your Dog is Really Having Fun DVD by Terry Ryan. Terry follows the path of domestication; how dogs view our world; canine body language including stress identification and reduction; matters of space and resources; the social development of dogs with an emphasis on puppies; agnostic behavior.
