Weekly Update from Dogwise: Summer Reads with Substance

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Dog enthusiasts like you sometimes are in a bit of a pickle when it comes to summer time reading. We know some of you would prefer to read a novel or a dog mystery on those hot summer days and not lug the latest learning theory reference book with you to the beach. On the other hand, there are many of you so devoted to building up your dog knowledge that reading books which help you do so is a constant requirement. Luckily there is a middle ground - books of substance that are well written, amusing in some cases, and while thought provoking are "easy" on the brain. Here are some suggestions for summer reading material that have some real substance to them:

  • The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell. Our Book of the Week, 20% at $12.80. Actually almost anything that Trish has written falls into this category (unless you go try to dig up her dissertation probably) - informative, full of great ideas but very readable.
  • Thinking in Pictures by Temple Grandin. One of three incredibly interesting books by Temple Grandin. "Thinking" was the first one she wrote and was recently made into a critically acclaimed movie.
  • How Dogs Think by Stanley Coren. Dr. Coren is one of the most interesting and entertaining author of books on canine behavior - fascinating insights abound in his easy to read books.
  • The Lost Pet Chronicles by Kat Albrecht. This book of how Kat became a real life "pet detective" was a surprise best seller several years ago when it first came out, filled with incredible stories of how dogs can be used to search for lost pets. We were so impressed with this that we published her follow-up book on this subject - Dog Detectives, How to Train Your Dogs to Find Lost Pets - that shows you how you can train your dog to perform this valuable service in your community.
Our product feature this week is the Aqua-fur bowls, which are to drool for! The aqua-fur is a silicone bowl that looks and acts like a dog bowl yet folds up like an origami pumpkin to put in your pocket. Very handy for events, shows, hiking, camping and on the road. Completely unfolded, works nicely as a "bucket" to tote food, water, grooming gear.

Newest books & products:

  • Yoga Puppies Calendar 2011 by Browntrout. This wall calendar gives new meaning to “Downward Facing Dog”. The Yoga Puppies 2011 calendar hosts a year full of images showing popular dog breeds positioned in classic yoga postures with the help of digital technology. These reworked dog portraits will bend your mind and delight you. You’ve never seen a Standard Poodle in Tree pose? Or a Golden Retriever really nailing Warrior II? The time is now, young yogi. The time is here to laugh and be inspired. After all, if a Chihuahua can hold Pendant pose, so can you!
  • Dog Park Club - A Mystery by Cynthia Robinson. Max Bravo is a mid-rung opera singer with a diva's towering ego. And he doesn't do favors. Not until the day he visits a troubled friend in Berkley and offers to walk her dog. Max quickly discovers the local dog park. It's an odd, private little world - a preserve for neighborhood crackpots and lay-abouts and, incidentally, their dogs.
