Many dog trainers start out their careers working one on one with clients. Offering a group class adds a layer of complexity for the trainer, not only having to learn how and what to teach but managing the business end of classes as well as scheduling and marketing. While we dont have a book titled How to Teach Dog Training Classes (maybe we should??!!), we have a wide assortment of resources available to you if you want to see how others teach group classes, learn about specialized classes, how to deal with people, and how to handle the business end of things. This is just a sampling of what is out there:
Sirius Puppy Training - The Original Off-Leash Puppy Class DVD featuring Ian Dunbar. Watching Ians puppy classes is still one of the best places to start.
The Dog Trainers Resource books from APDT. Each one has sections on class curriculums and tips on how to run a successful group class. Our books of the week, now you can get all three for just $10.00 a piece through the 20th of July.
How to Run a Dog Business 2nd Ed by Veronica Boutelle. What you need to know about scheduling, policies, marketing and pricing to make group classes a profitable part of your business.
Teaching the Reactive Dog Class by Emma Parsons and Focus Not Fear by Ali Brown. Two great books to give you insights into classes for reactive dogs.
Teaching Clicker Classes - An Instructors Guide by Deb Jones. How to help your students master clicker training.
The Instructors Manual by John Rogerson This is an older, hard to find book by one of the more original thinkers in dog training. BTW, John will be a speaker at the APDT conference in October in Las Vegas.
Coaching People to Train Their Dogs by Terry Ryan. Not totally focused on training classes, but as many good and creative ideas as you will find anywhere.
