Weekly Update: Group Class Ideas

Dear !*FIRSTNAME*!,

Many dog trainers start out their careers working one on one with clients. Offering a group class adds a layer of complexity for the trainer, not only having to learn how and what to teach but managing the business end of classes as well as scheduling and marketing. While we don’t have a book titled “How to Teach Dog Training Classes” (maybe we should??!!), we have a wide assortment of resources available to you if you want to see how others teach group classes, learn about specialized classes, how to deal with people, and how to handle the business end of things. This is just a sampling of what is out there:

  • Sirius Puppy Training - The Original Off-Leash Puppy Class DVD featuring Ian Dunbar. Watching Ian’s puppy classes is still one of the best places to start.
  • The Dog Trainer’s Resource books from APDT. Each one has sections on class curriculums and tips on how to run a successful group class. Our books of the week, now you can get all three for just $10.00 a piece through the 20th of July.
  • How to Run a Dog Business 2nd Ed by Veronica Boutelle. What you need to know about scheduling, policies, marketing and pricing to make group classes a profitable part of your business.
  • Teaching the Reactive Dog Class by Emma Parsons and Focus Not Fear by Ali Brown. Two great books to give you insights into classes for reactive dogs.
  • Teaching Clicker Classes - An Instructor’s Guide by Deb Jones. How to help your students master clicker training.
  • The Instructor’s Manual by John Rogerson This is an older, hard to find book by one of the more original thinkers in dog training. BTW, John will be a speaker at the APDT conference in October in Las Vegas.
  • Coaching People to Train Their Dogs by Terry Ryan. Not totally focused on training classes, but as many good and creative ideas as you will find anywhere.

  • We've added to our large selection of eBook offerings, our newest in our store are:

  • eBook: Remember Me? Loving and Caring for A Dog with Canine Cognitive Dysfunction by Eileen Anderson.
  • eBook: The Nosework Dog: Understanding Olfaction and Odors Manual by Fred Helfers.
  • eBook: Kids and Dogs - A Professional's Guide to Helping Families by Colleen Pelar.
  • eBook: Forever Home: Dog Training 101 & How to be a Better Shelter Volunteer by Mike Deathe.

  • Newest books & products:

The Terrier Grooming Chart Book by Sam Kohl. Anyone who has a terrier in their life can tell you how spirited is their personality and how boundless their energy. They come in all sizes, extra small to extra large and most have coats of wiry hair requiring special grooming techniques to help maintain and enhance the characteristics of their breeding.

Dogs to Diapers for the Safety of Your Baby DVD by Carrie Silva. The family dog is often not properly prepared for the arrival of a newborn resulting in the dog becoming isolated or rehomed. Carrie Silva Wooddell, a professional dog trainer with over ten years of experience, teaches families how to better understand their dog and demonstrates how to prepare and introduce their dog to their new baby.

Help Your Dog Fight Cancer - Empowerment for Dog Owners, 3rd Ed. by Laurie Kaplan. Half of our dogs will have cancer in their lifetimes, and yet as dog owners, most of us know little or nothing about caring for a dog with cancer. This is an essential resource for anyone who is living with and caring for a dog with cancer.
