Weekly Update: New Treibball Book!

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Dogwise Publishing is very pleased to announce the release of Get the Ball Rolling - A Step by Step Guide to Training for Treibball by Dianna Stearns. Most of you have probably heard of Treibball by now, but for those of who have not, here's a quick overview. Originally conceived in Europe by trainer Jan Nijboer, Treibball can be thought of as a mixture of a herding trial and canine soccer match in which dogs are asked to maneuver a number of exercise balls toward a goal in a field of play. The dog's handler directs the movements of the dog at a distance using verbal and hand signals - similar to what is done at a herding trial. The faster the dog can drive all the balls to the goal while making the fewest errors, the better his score will be. While there have been a few DVDs and You Tube videos produced on Treibball, a selection of which we carry, to date there have been no comprehensive books written on what Treibball is and more importantly how to train a dog to master the behaviors necessary to do Treibball either for fun or in competitions. So we were very excited when Dianna Stearns approached us over a year ago to publish a book on Treibball with a primary focus on detailed step by step training regimens since many dogs and their handlers will have to learn a series of new and relatively complex behaviors (and behavior chains) for success in Treibball. Because the behaviors required are fairly challenging and you cannot physically maneuver the dog, clicker/marking training and shaping techniques are used extensively in this book and it includes dozens of photographs and diagrams for ease of learning.

At the present time, the organized sport of Treibball is still evolving since it is so new. A Treibball competition that you would choose to enter might just be an informal gathering of enthusiasts or sponsored by a group like the American Treibball Association. You may find different rules and things are likely to change over time. While Get the Ball Rolling is written from the perspective of the American Treibball Association, the skills and techniques that you and your dog need to learn will be basically the same whether you are playing alone with your dog in your backyard or at a competition. While some dogs (especially herding dogs) may find the learning curve to be easier, any dog that can sit, stay, back up, can be directed to move to the right or left at a distance, and drive a ball forward with his nose can succeed at Treibball. Ball size and the distance the dog is required to drive the ball can be adjusted to accommodate smaller dogs, so they can play too. Since we know that many of you enjoy such training challenges, learning how to master these skills with your dog is a lot of fun, improves your training techniques and helps to build a stronger bond between you and your dog, the latter being what Dianna says is the biggest benefit to doing Treibball. We hope you will give it a try!
