We have been receiving a lot of inquiries about our publishing business lately and so we thought it might be appropriate to tell you why we got into publishing, what kinds of projects we are looking for, and what is in our pipeline. You never know, you may want to write a book some day and if you do, you should think about letting us a take a look at it.

We got into the publishing business a few years ago, primarily because lots of really good books were going out of print as publishers chose not to reprint them for a variety of reasons. As a retailer, we can't stay in business unless there are books out there for us to sell. Canine Massage was an early example of that. We knew there was a market for this book and we worked with the author to update it and happily it has turned out to be quite a success. The Dog in Action was a similar example, although this was a book that had been out of print for years that we were able to get the rights to reprint in response to strong customer demand.

Having cut our teeth on books that had already been in print, we decided to see if we could publish entirely new titles on our own. One of our first attempts was Raw Dog Food which has been our best seller to date. Our most recent publishing effort was Right on Target, the first book to focus exclusively on targeting.

We currently have a large number of projects in the pipeline. While we hesitate to give out due dates (we have learned the hard way that working with printers can be like herding cats!), here are some things you can look for. First is a collection of top articles from APDT's Chronicle of the Dog which should be a great resource for dog trainers. Another is a book devoted to training techniques for "difficult" dogs - no, not everyone is lucky enough to only have to train Goldens! Further out we expect books on subjects ranging from positive training techniques for show dogs, operating a dog training business, and training dogs to find lost pets.

While we are open to lots of different ideas, recognize that our market is principally dog trainers, show people and breeders, and what we call "dog enthusiasts." We are looking for cutting edge stuff for serious people who are willing to take the time to learn the best way to train and care for their dogs. We are willing to work with inexperienced authors as long as they have strong credentials to write about a particular subject.
