Weekly Update from Dogwise: Reactivity
|
|
Dear Dogwise Customer,
Probably the hottest topic in dog behavior and training circles right now is reactivity. You may never be able to "cure" a dog who is reactive - it's hard to counter poor socialization and/or genetics - but there are a number of ways you may be able to control it, at least some of the time. This is a topic that a number of leading trainers have been grappling with for a number of years now, and there are a variety of techniques and strategies that you can employ with reactive dogs, both yours and those of your clients. While the list below is by no means complete, here are a number of books and DVDs for those of you who want to expand your knowledge of this important issue:
We are also offering Changing People Changing Dogs by Dee Ganley at a special price this week at $19.99. Ganley walks the reader through a management program and helps dog owners identify triggers of reactive behavior in their dog. Her program teaches dog owners counterconditioning to help desensitize dogs to their scary stimulus while offering acceptable behaviors and self-control.
If you are in an area with ticks check our Tick Key! Dr. Marty Becker loves these easy to use tick removers. Stick it in your back pocket on your hike with your dog for safe removal of ticks of all sizes, including deer ticks and dog ticks. Place the key over the tick in the teardrop hole. Slide the tick into specially tapered slot. Pull key up from skin. The tick is removed easily, head and all!
