Weekly Update from Dogwise: Reactivity

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Probably the hottest topic in dog behavior and training circles right now is reactivity. You may never be able to "cure" a dog who is reactive - it's hard to counter poor socialization and/or genetics - but there are a number of ways you may be able to control it, at least some of the time. This is a topic that a number of leading trainers have been grappling with for a number of years now, and there are a variety of techniques and strategies that you can employ with reactive dogs, both yours and those of your clients. While the list below is by no means complete, here are a number of books and DVDs for those of you who want to expand your knowledge of this important issue:

We are also offering Changing People Changing Dogs by Dee Ganley at a special price this week at $19.99. Ganley walks the reader through a management program and helps dog owners identify triggers of reactive behavior in their dog. Her program teaches dog owners counterconditioning to help desensitize dogs to their scary stimulus while offering acceptable behaviors and self-control.

If you are in an area with ticks check our Tick Key! Dr. Marty Becker loves these easy to use tick removers. Stick it in your back pocket on your hike with your dog for safe removal of ticks of all sizes, including deer ticks and dog ticks. Place the key over the tick in the teardrop hole. Slide the tick into specially tapered slot. Pull key up from skin. The tick is removed easily, head and all!

Newest books & products:
  • Picking Your Performance Puppy by Helen Grinnell King. If you have ever wondered why some dogs excel while others struggle and why some dogs have longer careers than others, Picking Your Performance Puppy will take the mystery out structure for performance and answer those questions.
  • Clear Mind - A Goal Setting Workbook for Agility Handlers by Shawna L. Palmer and Daisy Peel. Clear Mind focuses on immediate application of goal setting principles aimed at achieving your handling potential. Each chapter discusses an important topic in setting dynamic and effective goals. With step by step guidance, handlers will finish with a solid plan for agility success and an understanding of how to continue setting the most effective goals for years to come.
  • Clear Mind 2 - The Performance Goal Tracking Journal by Shawna L. Palmer and Daisy Peel. Take the next step in Goal Setting Success! Too often handlers do not follow through with critical evaluation of their performance. Gaining feedback about your performance, and tracking progress toward your goals, are essential steps if the effort of training and competing is going to be maximized.
