Weekly Update from Dogwise: Dog Quirks
Dear Dogwise Customer,
We are very pleased to announce the arrival of Lynn Hoover's new book Dog Quirks and Behavior Solutions. Many of you may know Lynn as the founder and past president of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and author of The Family in Dog Behavior Consulting (our Book of the Week until August 11th with a special 30% off price of $17.47). What will make this book such an interesting read for trainers and enthusiasts are the real-life case studies showing how Lynn worked with families to deal with problem behaviors. Two things stand out here - one is "real-life." Many books offer simple solutions to simple problems, but in real life things never are that simple, like an otherwise well trained dog who as she aged could not stop jumping up on and nipping people. The other factor - as in her first book - is the role of the family. Most dogs live with more than one person and that complicates things as each person is likely to react to the dog in a different manner, have different expectations, and so the dog does not receive consistent responses from the various human members of the household. So while Mom may do things one way, Junior does it another way. In summary, "real-life" situations are always more complex and realistic (and interesting!) than you often read about in books on problem solving. Readers will appreciate Lynn's common sense approaches and be better prepared to deal with problems they may encounter with their own dogs or when working with others.
A new approach to dealing with aggressive and reactive dogs is getting lots of favorable notice recently. Seattle based trainer Grisha Stewart has recently finished up two DVDs on "Behavior Adjustment Training," or BAT for short, and is beginning work on a book on the subject. BAT involves the use of what Grisha terms "functional rewards," real-life rewards that the dog has shown to be willing to work for, and how they can be used to help a dog overcome these problems. The techniques can be used proactively as part of the socialization process for puppies and for older dogs who exhibit fear and aggression. We have two DVDs in stock with similar titles:
