Weekly Update: Older Favorites Vol. 1

Dear Dogwise Customer,

We sometimes get so focused on new books and DVDs that we tend to forget about those works that have stood the test of time, many of which when first released were truly revolutionary in their impact on dog trainers and enthusiasts. So we are going to spend the next few weeks highlighting books that have been around for at least five years (although some are in second editions now) that if somehow you have never read you should consider adding them to your library. Many of these are also available in Ebook formats. Here is our first grouping, in no particular order:

  • Dogsteps: A New Look by Rachel Page Elliott. While there have been other books on dog locomotion, Dogsteps was the first to employ "moving x-rays" to look inside a dog while on a treadmill to see exactly what was going on structurally. This book is a favorite of dog show fanciers and anyone who wants to evaluate the health of his or her dog as faulty movement is often the first clue something is wrong. 20% off until August 20th.
  • Teamwork and Teamwork II by Stewart Nordensson and Lydia Kelley. Also available in a DVD and Ebook form. For anyone with limited mobility who wants a well mannered and helpful dog to live with, these books and DVD are your best choice as they have been for many years. Physical books 20% off until August 20th.
  • How Dogs Learn by Mary Burch and Jon Bailey. We consider this book one of the real classics in many regards: it provides an interesting history of dog training and the role of various trainers in the development of modern training techniques; and it provides one of the most user friendly explanations of the terms and concepts relating to operant conditioning. 20% off until August 20th.
  • Bones Would Rain from the Sky by Suzanne Clothier. This is one of the most beloved books on dogs and people with incredible insights into the relationships between them. If you haven't read this, get yourself a copy, go to the beach or find a shady spot in your backyard while the weather it still nice and read it. You will be happy you did. 20% off until August 20th.

Have you checked out our Plubbers yet? These toys are full of attitude! They float, squeak and bounce. Plush + Rubber = PLUBBER! PLUBBER offers the soft feel and fun of PLUSH and the durability of RUBBER all in one great toy.

Newest books & products:

  • Do As I Do: Using Social Learning to Train Dogs Book (with Instructional DVD) by Claudia Fugazza. Recent research suggests that dogs can engage in social learning which includes the ability to observe the actions of other dogs and imitate them to learn new behaviors. This natural skill can be used to teach dogs new behaviors using the Do As I Do protocol presented in this book-DVD combination. The “Do As I Do” method is particularly useful in working with service dogs and canine athletes who must masters skills such as ringing a bell, jumping over a hurdle, spinning and dozens more. DVD has English subtitles.
  • Controlled Aggression: In Theory & Practice by Jerry Bradshaw. K9 Training manual for professional police and protection trainers. This book covers K9 selection, drive development, human focused aggression, out on command redirects and call offs. Appendices cover European dog sports and attentive heeling for police K9 and sport competition.
  • Secrets of A Dog Trainer: Positive Problem Solving for A Well-Behaved Dog by Victoria Schade. Approaching common dog training problems from a trainer's point of view, Schade helps readers understand how minor problems can become major ones if treated incorrectly. She illustrates each behavioral challenge with a case study, then provides several '“choose-your-own-ending”' possibilities as to how the behavior might develop without proper intervention. She then shares the positive training alternatives.
