Weekly Update from Dogwise: Focus on Socialization

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Just about everybody knows that socializing puppies is critical for raising behaviorally sound dogs. Socializing a dog is not "hard," but it can be time consuming, takes some creativity and needs to be done at the right age. While we do not have a book titled "Socializing Your Puppy," any good puppy book will deal with this subject. We have five books in particular we like to recommend on this subject:

  • The Breeder's Guide to Raising Superstar Dogs by Jerry Hope. This is book is a very good choice, especially for breeders who are working to start proper socialization for puppies in the first eight weeks of life before they go to new homes.
  • Another Piece of the Puzzle: Puppy Development edited by Pat Hastings and Erin Ann Rouse. The first two chapters in this book (written by Kathryn Lanam and Diane Jacobsen respectively) present excellent information on various aspects of socialization. This is our Book of the Week through August 24th priced at a 20% discount, only $11.96.
  • How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With, 4th Ed. by Clarice Rutherford and David Neil. For years, responsible breeders have been sending this book home along with puppies to new owners. What to expect and what to do with your pup during the various stages of development.
  • After You Get Your Puppy by Ian Dunbar. A large section of this book by the guru of modern puppy training is devoted to socialization with people. A great primer, full of useful and creative training tips.
  • Give Your Puppy a Choice: Modern Socialization and Behavior Training DVD by Grisha Stewart. Using the principles of Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) to help socialize puppies and deal with fear issues. By the way, Grisha's new Behavior Adjustment Training book is expected to be in-stock in early September. For all you Grisha Stewart fans, stay tuned!
One of our most popular treats is Bowser's Buffalo Bites. Chopped and formed buffalo jerky treats, 10 strips to an 8 oz. package. Strips can be easily broken into bite-size pieces to use as bait; soft, moist texture, but non-greasy. Contains soy protein. Dogs love this stuff!

Newest books & products:

  • Tellington TTouch for Dogs DVD by Lori Stevens. 3 DVD Set/ 1 Hand-out CD-Rom This workshop gives you the knowledge necessary to immediately use TTouch® on your own dog to help with their behavior and health-related issues. In this workshop, specifically focused on dogs and their guardians, you will be introduced to tools and techniques to reduce stress in your dog, improve performance, and enhance health.
  • 101 Ways to Think Outside the Box DVD by Emily Larlham. This DVD will appeal to Dog Trainers, Dog Training Newbies, Freestylers, Agility and Obedience competitors, rowdy dog parents and to those with the shy dogs that need a boost. Emily starts with building a calm foundation and takes it to the next level with positive, bonding methods.
  • Freestyle and Beyond DVD by Nancy Tanner. Offering fun new tools to develop your dog's focus and ability to work together as a team, this seminar focuses on canine freestyle but can be applied to a variety of other sports.
