Weekly Update: Getting Ready for the APDT Conference

Dear Dogwise Customer,

As we always say, getting ready for the annual APDT Educational Conference is like planning for the invasion of Normandy. We have to get all the right stuff at the right place at the right time so we can have the books and DVDs you want while visiting the exhibit hall. One thing we know we have to have our act together on is books and DVDs by featured speakers whose items are always popular. A few weeks ago we talked about Nicole Wilde and Virginia Broitman, this week we will feature three more speakers, each one of them having authored one or more popular books. Making the long trip to Spokane will be worth it to hear each of them speak:

  • Grisha Stewart is the author and creator of a behavioral modification and training technique called Behavior Adjustment Training (we have a book and DVDs on the subject) as well as her popular The Official Ahisma Dog Training Manual. Grisha will be speaking on "Choice Based Training for Puppy Classes" and "Using BAT in Growly Dog Classes."
  • Brian Hare, author of the best-selling The Genius of Dogs, will be speaking on "The Genius of Dogs, New Discoveries about the Intelligence of Man's Best Friend" and "Evaluating Genius in Dogs Using Dognition."
  • Veronica Boutelle, noted business consultant to dog trainers and other dog pros and author of the new The Business of Dog Walking and two other books, will be speaking on "Making the Sale - How to Help More Dogs" and "Getting Better Results from your Non-Sequential Classes."

While we will have books from all of the speakers mentioned throughout the conference, sometimes these items sell out - so buying your copy ahead of time and bringing it along may make sense. There will be an author book signing event on both Friday and Saturday this year run by our friends at APDT.

Two additional notes. We appreciate your patience on the new Karen Overall book Manual of Clinical Behavioral Medicine for Dogs and Cats we know many of you are waiting on backorders. The books should be arriving soon! Also, don't forget that we have Breed Calendars now in stock for 2014 for those of you early-bird holiday shopping types.

Newest books & products:

  • The Art of Reading Agility Courses by Kathy Keats. A beautiful agility run is no less a masterpiece than any other work of art. The Art of Reading Agility Courses will help you understand even the subtle challenges on a course so that you can choose the best path and handling for you and your dog.
  • Behavior Problems of the Dog & Cat - 3rd Ed by Gary Landsberg, Wayne Hunthausen and Lowell Ackerman. Formerly the Handbook of Behavior Problems of the Dog and Cat, the new edition of the definitive guide to the diagnosis and treatment of behavior problems of the dog and cat has been extensively updated.
  • Starmark Pro-Training Clicker The StarMark Clicker has an ergonomic design that is comfortable to hold in your hand and the easy to find and press raised button helps prevent missed clicks. Made with a stainless steel clicker element that will not rust.
