In dog training, a jackpot is an especially great reward given to a dog for an excellent performance. For a book publisher and bookseller like Dogwise, a jackpot is when we get two great new books in stock during the same week! Well, all we can say is we hit the jackpot this week.
First to arrive was the latest from Dogwise
Publishing in association with our friends at the Association of Pet Dog
Trainers entitled The
Dog
Trainer's Resource: The APDT Chronicle of the Dog Collection. This reference
book contains 80 articles by 40 well known experts covering a wide range
of subjects that all dog trainers - and would-be dog trainers - need
to master
to be successful professionals. Divided into ten sections, you will find in-depth
articles from the Chronicle's past issues on learning theory, aggression, clients
and the community, and the business of dog training among others. You will find
answers and opinions to the questions and issues dog trainers face every day
such as:
- How should I price my services?
- What are the latest thoughts on shaping vs luring?
- Should I volunteer at a shelter to improve my training skills?
- How do I separate fact from opinion when attending a lecture or seminar?
- Should I send my clients to the local dog park to help socialize their puppies?
- How do I work with local vets to get more referrals?
Second to arrive was Patricia McConnell's For the Love of a Dog. If you enjoyed her The Other End of the Leash (and who didn't?), you will find this a fascinating exploration of canine emotion and body language. As always, Trish's work is very well written, easy-to-understand, but takes on challenging subjects that should be of interest to both trainers and the average dog owner. Cutting-edge stuff, but enjoyable to read - a great combination.
As we mentioned last week, we expect both of these books to be hot sellers at
the APDT educational conference in
Kansas City in September. While we are planning to ship lots of these to
our booth, there is always the chance we might run out and we are expecting
crowded conditions in the exhibit hall at least some of the time. You might
consider ordering now and bringing the books with you. Trish McConnell and
several of the contributors to The
Dog Trainer's Resource Book are scheduled to be at our author book signing
event on Saturday the 16th.
