Weekly Update: The Nose Knows Even More!

Dear Dogwise Customer,

One of the truly hot topics in dogs these days has to do with scenting ability. Obviously we have known about the dog's remarkable sense of smell for decades, but we seem to just be scratching the surface of what dogs are able to do in the area of scent detection (epilepsy, cancer, diabetes, drug detection, under water scenting, cadaver recovery - the list just goes on and on). As we learn more about the amazing scenting power these dogs possess, we are also learning new training techniques to harness it for beneficial purposes. The good thing is that there is a lot of new material being published or filmed these days to help you learn even more. Here are some items that are blazing new trails:

Time passes so fast, we just had a phone call from Lynn Loar who helped Evelyn Pang & Hilary Louie with their book Good Dog - Kids Teach Kids About Dog Training and Behavior, which we published back in 2008. The girls are now in their senior year of college. Congrats to both girls and we wish them the best!

Newest books & products:

  • 12 Terrible Dog Training Mistakes Owners That Ruin Their Dog's Behavior...And How to Avoid Them by Suzanne Hetts. You’ll discover what you DON’T have to do so you won’t waste your valuable time and still not help your dog. Heck, I'll even show you why having your dog do what you want has nothing to do with "being dominant" AND Expose many of the dog training myths you’ve been told (or seen on TV) so you can be confident about the best ways to get your dog to do what you want!
  • 101 Dog Tricks, Kids Edition: Fun and Easy Activities, Games, and Crafts Kyra Sundance. Yes, kids can train dogs! Now, 101 Dog Tricks: Kids Edition brings you the same successful methods, tailored especially for kids. This book features full color step-by-step photos of every trick, making it easy to follow along. Real kids are featured in the photos, actually training dogs-- you can do it too! Many tricks are simple enough that your dog can learn them in ten minutes.
  • Fishing Dogs: A Guide to the History, Talents, and Training of the Baildale, the Flounderhounder, the Angler Dog, and Sundry Other Breeds of Aquatic Dogs (Canis Piscatorius) by Raymond Coppinger. In Fishing Dogs, Coppinger sheds light on the true value of fishing dogs of every size, shape, and color. Monsoon dogs, for example, lay in the bilge of boats until they are disturbed by the shipping of water. At that point, they rise up out of the bilge and unleash with tremendous power a series of epicentric rotational reciprocations, thus expelling inches of boat-threatening water. Coppinger also introduces readers to the Maine bowplunk dog, which received its name from its deeply ingrained habit of standing, proud and brave, on the bow of his master’s boat as it moves through the choppy waters off Maine’s coast.
