Weekly Update from Dogwise: The Human Half of Dog Training

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Dogwise Publishing is pleased to announce the release of Risë VanFleet's The Human Half of Dog Training - Collaborating with Clients to Get Results. Pleased because we think this book will really help trainers with what for many is the most difficult part of dog training - dealing with human clients - and pleased because the book will be available at the upcoming APDT Conference where Risë will be a featured speaker.

Dog trainers, of course, have a strong desire to help dogs learn appropriate behaviors and solve the kinds of problems that most dogs experience or create. It is why they get into the business in the first place and it is what they are trained to do. What is challenging for so many trainers is that their success in working with dogs ultimately depends on the cooperation, understanding and follow-through of the people who bring their dogs to them to be trained. Unless trainers can work in a collaborative way with people, all the good work they put into training the dog may go down the drain. In her new book, Risë will give you the tools you need to establish the kind of a relationship with your human clients so that your canine clients will receive the training they deserve. Those tools include how to develop the skill of empathic listening, how to recognize cognitive distortions and biases (both the clients and yours!), and how to overcome resistance when you suggest a training program that at first may not seem logical to the client. There is also a great chapter on how to deal with client families who have children who interact with the dog.

For those of you who don't know her, Risë spent many years working with people and children as a licensed psychologist. Several years ago Risë wrote Play Therapy with Kids & Canines, an important book on the benefits of such an approach. As she became more involved with dog training, Risë realized that many of the techniques used to deal with family issues could be applied to helping dog trainers dealing with human clients to facilitate successful dog training. We are confident that any dog trainer will benefit from the material in this new book.

Newest books & products: Thanks from all of us at Dogwise and we look forward to seeing many of you in a couple weeks at the APDT conference.
