Weekly Update from Dogwise: Dog InSight, new from Pam Reid! |
|
Dear Dogwise Customer,
Dogwise Publishing is very pleased to announce the publication of Dog InSight, a new book by Pam Reid. Most of you are familiar with Pam Reid, the author of the highly-acclaimed Excel-Erated Learning, through her various writings and seminars (by the way, she will be speaking at the APDT Conference this week). Her new book is based on essays/columns she has written over the years for Dogs in Canada, a great periodical, but one not widely available in the United States. Pam has grouped the information into three categories - Behavior, Training and Behavior Problems. Most of the essays pose some sort of question or raise a particular issue (are temperament tests good predictors of future behavior, what is the role of 'dominance' in behavior problems, etc.) and then reviews available research in an attempt to come up with answers. Of course, not every question has a pat answer, and Pam's willingness to consider different points of view and acknowledge cases where more research is needed, makes her writing credible and will make you think hard as you read - and that's a good thing! Dog InSight will be available for purchase at the APDT Conference.
Three interesting new books we want to highlight have arrived at our warehouse this week:
- Rin Tin Tin - The Life and The Legend by Susan Orlean.
At least some of us are old enough to remember how thrilling it was to watch Rin Tin Tin on TV years ago. This great new book (similar in depth of research and writing skill to Seabiscuit) explores the story of the original Rin Tin Tin who was brought home from Europe at the end of World War I by Lee Duncan and how he became the number one box office star in America at the height of his popularity. The book then goes on to the "descendents" of the original dog, the television series and Rinty's enduring legend. This is bound to be a best seller and great Holiday gift.
- Going Home - Finding Peace When Pets Die by Jon Katz. Most of you know Jon Katz through his stories of life with Border Collies on Bedlam farm. This book explores the issue of the end of life - make sure you have plenty of tissue on hand.
- Canine Reproduction - The Breeder's Guide, 3rd Edition by Phyllis Holst. This best selling book on breeding dogs is now in its third edition, a real testament to its longevity and the value it has provided breeders. We are glad to see our friends at Alpine Publishing have chosen to keep improving it and allowing it to remain in print.
Dogwise is having a Howl-O-Ween Costume Parade on Facebook! We will be randomly selecting 5 participants posting a photo of their dog in a Howl-O-Ween Costume to receive their choice of one of the following eBooks - It's a Dog Not a Toaster by Diana Kerew-Shaw or Behavior Adjustment Training - BAT for Fear, Frustration, and Aggression in Dogs by Grisha Stewart. Check out our Dogwise Facebook page for the latest in new books, dvds and products, and chat with other Dogwise people.
Newest books & products:
- The More The Terrier - a Pet Rescue Mystery by Linda Johnston. While helping to find new homes for victims of animal hoarding, shelter manager Lauren Vancouver must come to the aid of her boss, Mamie Spelling, after the CEO of a pet shelter, who threatened to expose Mamie's hoarding, is found dead.
- Help For Your Arthritic Dog by Monica Segal. Certain foods and supplements can have a big impact on inflammation and bring relief from stiffness and pain. Understand that what you are feeding these dogs can be a powerhouse of help or cause more problems, so choose wisely! If you want to ask Monica any questions, check her out on our Dogwise Facebook discussions page.
- Pure Gold - Adventures With Six Rescued Golden Retrievers by Holli Pfau. A captivating tale of life with six rescued or second-hand golden retrievers, told with tenderness and respect. Pure Gold swings from rollicking adventures to bedside vigils in hospitals, from confident, assured partnerships to disastrous outings in the show ring.
