Weekly Update: How to Enjoy Your Trip to Spokane!!

Dear Dogwise Customer,

For those of you who are planning on attending the APDT Conference in Spokane, congratulations! You are coming to a great part of the country, only about 150 miles from the Dogwise home base in Wenatchee. Anyhow, instead of talking about books and DVDs like we usually do, here are our tips for enjoying the conference and the city:

  • By late October, Spokane is still beautiful but it's heading toward winter at 2000 feet of elevation. The days should be cool and sunny, but the evenings will be cold - dress accordingly!
  • The Spokane River runs right behind the convention center and there is a beautiful walkway that extends for miles in both directions toward and away from downtown. Just to the west of the convention center is the site of Expo 74 which was Spokane's world fair in 1974. A few buildings remain, it's another good place to walk.
  • For those of you wanting to visit the Dogwise booth and all the other booths, check the Exhibit Hall schedule carefully. The exhibit hall is open Thursday evening, then two sessions on Friday, then two sessions on Saturday. The exhibit hall is closed on Wednesday and Sunday. Because the hours are limited, the hall can be congested so plan accordingly and be patient once inside!
  • APDT is hosting two book signing events. While we supply nearly all of the books, author/speakers are notorious for sometimes being late or not even showing up. And, as we have said before, the books we carry by speakers (some are shown to the right) are generally the most popular. We suggest buying any books you wanted signed early in the conference to make sure we have not run out.

We look forward to meeting many of you at the conference!

Newest books & products:

  • The Dog Trainer's Resource 3 - APDT Chronicle of the Dog Collection by Adrienne Hovey. In this volume, containing the best articles from the past few years, The Dog Trainer’s Resource 3 places a special emphasis on developing skills in areas where many trainers may lack experience, like specialized training protocols and improving business practices for profitability and longevity.
  • The 20 Principles All Animal Trainers Must Know DVD featuring Roger Abrantes. The 20 Principles... is essential viewing for all trainers whether they train dogs, horses, cats or any other species. This DVD through lecture, PowerPoint and live demos, contains all the basic principles of animal learning. All professional animal trainers or serious hobby trainers can consult this video to check processes and definitions or to get inspiration for resolving problems.
  • What the Dog Knows: The Science and Wonder of Working Dogs by Cat Warren. Warren interviews cognitive psychologists, historians, medical examiners, epidemiologists, and forensic anthropologists, as well as the breeders, trainers, and handlers who work with and rely on these remarkable and adaptable animals daily. Along the way, she discovers story after story that proves the impressive capabilities—as well as the very real limits—of working dogs and their human partners. Clear-eyed and unsentimental, Warren explains why our partnership with dogs is woven into the fabric of society and why we keep finding new uses for their wonderful noses.
