Weekly Update from Dogwise: Referencing Coppinger

Dear Dogwise Customer,

We are working on several manuscripts at Dogwise Publishing that we plan to publish over the next 12 months. One common thread we are seeing is how often the authors we work with reference the work of Ray Coppinger, both his writings in academic journals and in the book he wrote with his wife, Lorna, titled Dogs: A New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior and Evolution. While we have carried this book since it was first published a few years ago, its now becoming evident just how important this book is to students of canine behavior. Ray's work on how dogs began to distinguish themselves from wolves and how the processes of domestication and selective breeding rapidly changed both the looks and behavior of dogs is critical to understanding dogs as they exist today - and the authors we are working with (among others) are recognizing just how important his work is. If you have not read this book, you really owe it to yourself to do so. To give you a little nudge, Dogs is our Book of the Week through October 27th, 20% off the regular price, only $14.36.

One of the most popular books at last year's APDT conference was Through a Dog's Ear (Book and CD) by Joshua Leeds and Susan Wagner who were speakers at the event. This book is an interesting look at how music can be used to calm your dog and create a healthier environment for him. The good news is we have lots of quantities of this in stock right now, the bad news (which will be good news for you) is somehow we ended up with too many. So for the time being, we are putting the book on sale at $12.95, regular price is $18.95.

Speaking of sounds, not only can they have a calming impact on your dog, but certain sounds can be used as part of a counter-conditioning program to deal with a dog's fears or anxieties from babies to gun fire to thunderstorms. If your dog might benefit from some help, check out Terry Ryan's whole series of Sounds Good CDs.

Great news! We've marked down all of our Canine Genius Toys. These dog toys are durable, chewable, configurable puzzles that you can stuff with tasty treats. Canine Genius toys connect together - so you can create a variety of puzzles that stimulate curiosity and appeal to your dog's natural desire to hunt and problem solve.
