We just got back from our annual book-selling trek to the APDT Educational Conference, held this past week in Louisville. And each year we like to tell those of you who were not able to attend what the dog trainers who were there were buying - even if you are not a dog trainer, by and large these are things that any dog enthusiast should want to own.
The hot subject this year was "Play" - using play in your dog training efforts, how to use play to build a better relationship with your dog, how to encourage and recognize play, and how to anticipate when play might morph into something rougher and less pleasant among dogs. Consequently the two best sellers were both new books of similar titles but with different focuses on on the subject:
The other best sellers tended to be speaker-driven. It's no surprise that after hearing a great presentation you want to buy what the speaker has written. So we sold lots of:
Other good sellers reflected current topics of interest in the dog training world. Body language remains a hot topic reflected in sales of Canine Body Language by Brenda Aloff and Canine Behavior - A Photo Illustrated Handbook by Barbara Handleman. Dealing with aggressive dogs is another topic concerning trainers today and they were snapping up Getting a Grip on Aggression Cases by Nicole Wilde. And one last area of interest - working with kids in training dogs - resulted in a lot of demand for items like Games and Rhymes for Dog Training Times by Alan Bauman and Good Dog! Kids Teach Kids About Dog Behavior and Training by Evelyn Pang and Hilary Louie.
This was one of the best attended APDT conferences in years and the staff of both APDT and the hotel did a great job running a fantastic event. Make your plans to attend next October in Oakland, California.
