Weekly Update: Two Interesting New Reads

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Every once in awhile, we get interesting new books from authors who are admittedly not experienced dog trainers or behaviorists, the source of most of our best sellers. Sometimes these books turn out to be best sellers (like The Genius of Dogs by Brian Hare or Inside of a Dog by Alexandra Horowitz) and sometimes not so much. We think these two books will have broad appeal to be both dog enthusiasts and to a wider audience (i.e., they may make great gifts for more casual dog owners.) They are:

  • How Dogs Love Us - A Neuroscientist and His Adopted Dog Decode the Canine Brain by Gregory Burns. We first read about this book in an excerpt published in the NY Times. As you may know, MRIs are used now to not only examine torn ACLs and the like, but are being used to scan how the human brain works. Wouldn't it be incredible if that technology could be employed to study a dog's brain? One problem, however - if you have ever had an MRI, you know that not only do you have to endure going into a tightly enclosed space, but you have to remain very still for several minutes. Could you train a dog to remain still in that situation? Well the answer in the case Mr. Burns and his dog Callie was yes - after a lot of very painstaking training! The results garnered by looking at a dog's mental activities with an MRI offers fascinating look into a dog's brain and how it reacts to a variety of situations and stimuli.
  • What the Dog Knows: The Science and Wonder of Working Dogs by Cat Warren. In this case, the working dog in question is a cadaver dog and the science and "wonders" have to do with the incredible ability of dog to sense where a body is located - even if buried for over a hundred years or beneath the surface of a lake. While this subject has been explored in other books, Cat brings a new perspective and enthusiasm to the subject and explores not only her own work with her dog but by interviewing a wide range of psychologists, medical anthropologists and both dog trainers and handlers. Again, a great book for both the enthusiast and anyone who is interested in dogs.

Newest books & products:

  • What is My Cat Saying? Feline Communication 101- Powerpoint CD by Carol Byrnes and Jacqueline Munera. Myths and Myth-understandings abound! Byrnes, creator of the "What is My Dog Saying?" power point for dog trainers has collaborated on this project with Certified Cat Behavior Consultant Munera of Positive Cattitudes to create a training tool for veterinary clinic staff, shelter staff, cat behavior specialists and cat owners alike.
  • The Kabai Handling System: Secrets to Success DVD by Krisztina Kabai. This video shows some of the techniques Krisztina uses to gain a competitive advantage on the agility field. She shows a variety of turns and maneuvers you can use to help your dog turn tight while saving valuable time and yardage. She also shows how the handler can get ahead of their dog in the most efficient way possible. And, of course, Krisztina is famous for having the most amazing blind crosses in the world. In this video you too will learn Krisztina's Secrets to Success!
  • The Philosopher and the Wolf: Lessons From the Wild on Love, Death, and Happiness by Mark Rowlands. Rowlands was a young philosophy professor, rootless and searching for life’s greater meaning. Shortly after arriving at the University of Alabama, he noticed a classified ad in the local paper advertising wolf cubs for sale, and decided he had to investigate, if only out of curiosity. It was love at first sight, and the bond that grew between philosopher and wolf reaffirms for us the incredible relationships that exist between man and animal.
