Dear Dogwise Customer,
With several new items on the horizon (literally as they are not quite here yet!), we thought we would complete our review of long time favorites by category before the new stuff arrives. Once again, these are books that have been in print for at least five years and are still category leaders although some are now in second editions that have been more recently updated.
Puppy Training: How to Teach a New Dog Old Tricks by Ian Dunbar.
"Tricks" is basically the book version of Ian's classic Sirius
Puppy Training video, and like the video has been a best seller
since originally published more than a decade ago. Everything the
new dog owner or your novice client needs to know to get their pups
trained in a humane and effective manner.
Clicker Training/Operant Conditioning: Don't Shoot the Dog by
Karen Pryor. Remains the first book to read for anyone who is
interested in operant conditioning and clicker training. The book
was not intended to be a dog training book originally (the methods
apply equally well to other animals and people - including spouses
and children!) but because of the title attracted the attention of
the dog world. Without a doubt one of the most important books
written for anyone who wants to be a good dog trainer.
Body Language: Dog Language by Roger Abrantes. The subject of
canine body language has recently attracted a lot of new books and
videos, however for years the most authoritative book on the subject
was Dog Language. Roger Abrantes did some pioneering research on the
evolution of the domestic dog and this book focuses in how dogs
communicate with other dogs and people. Fascinating reading.
Therapy Work: Therapy Dogs by Kathy Diamond Davis. Originally
published about ten years ago, Dogwise Publishing encouraged the
author to write a new edition in 2002 with a much stronger emphasis
on how to train a dog for therapy work. The result was the
definitive book on how to train, manage, and work with therapy dogs
in hospitals and nursing homes.
Whelping Puppies: The Whelping and Rearing of Puppies by Muriel
Lee. One of our all time best selling books, Whelping and Rearing
has been packaged and repackaged in a number of formats and covers
over the years. Through all these changes, however, the content
remains the same and is provides among the most easily explained and
understood information you can get your hands on if you are new to
whelping puppies at home. If a book graded by the number of times we
have been thanked for recommending it to a customer, this book would
be right at the top.
