One of the recent trends in the world of dogs has been a gradual decrease in the number of people buying purebred dogs from breeders, rather they are choosing to adopt dogs from shelters or rescue organizations. Accordingly, the number of books available to help the remaining active breeders to produce healthy puppies has also decreased. Twenty years ago we had probably 15 to 20 books to choose from, now that number is in the single digits. Fortunately the books we do have are really great - one classic from Phyllis Holst (thanks Alpine Publishing for keeping it in print.) We are having a special 20% off sale from now until Novenmber 18th on each of these great resources for breeders:

Beyond the Backyard - Train Your Dog to Listen Anytime, Anywhere! by Denise Fenzi. When we think of positive reinforcement training, we often think of a cookie - and thats a great start! People may enjoy thinking about them as mans best friend, but what actually drives the things they do? This is an outstanding and up-to-date guide to understanding your dog and his behavior with a very complete bibliography for those of you who want to see more of the most recent research.
Heal: The Vital Role of Dogs in the Search for Cancer Cures by Arlene Weintraub. Heal introduces readers to the field of comparative oncology by describing several research projects aimed at finding new therapies for cancers that are similar in dogs and people, including lymphoma, osteosarcoma, breast cancer, melanoma, and gastric cancer. Weintraub, who lost her sister to gastric cancer, also writes about the emerging science behind the remarkable ability of dogs to sniff out early stage cancer and the efforts underway to translate that talent into diagnostic devices for early detection of the disease. In the course of bringing these dogs and their human companions to life, Weintraub takes her own personal journey from grief to healing, as she shows her readers how mans best friend might be the key to unlocking the mysteries of cancer.
