Breeding dogs is a big responsibility as well as being a very scary experience

our current selection) that can get you prepared for the big day. We want to
mention two items that are good choices, especially for first timers. Whelping
Healthy Puppies DVD from
long-time breeder Sylvia Smart is well suited for those who want to see in action
what
you might have been taught by a mentor or read about.
From whelping box design to the actual birth of the puppies to tube feeding, this DVD will show you what you need to be able to handle most of the situations that are likely to arise. Canine Reproduction by Phyllis Holst is probably our most comprehensive breeding and reproduction guide, a favorite of many long-time breeders. Getting yourself a good book and a good DVD on this subject is a smart way to get started successfully.
Now for the tough part about breeding - what do you read to keep yourself awake
that long winter night when you are sure your bitch is about to give birth!?
How about the two latest mysteries from Carol Lea Benjamin: The
Hard Way and Without
a Word. Carol now has quite a series of mysteries featuring a detective
named Rachel Alexander and her pit bull partner Dashiell, set in New York.
Unlike some of the other dog mysteries we carry, Carol's are a little grittier
and more oriented towards the adult market. For those of you who
don't know, Carol wrote several classic training books (click
here for a list of all her books) before becoming a mystery writer so
you can be sure she has the "dog" part down pat!
