Dogwise Publishing is pleased to announce the release of Terry Ryans newest book Gamify Your Dog Training - Training Games for Group Instruction. Many of you, of course, are already familiar with Terry Ryan and the contributions she has made to the dog training community through her books, her seminars and her endlessly creative mind over the years.
While nothing can quite compare with training chickens with clickers, Terry may well end up being remembered most for her development of training games which can be used as effective and fun tools for helping clients work with their dogs in group classes. Gamify" features a large number of games (70+), some of which Terry has been using for years, as well as many new ones including some for your human clients without their dogs.
What makes this new book so great is that the first section in the book details what you as a trainer need to do to get organized to use games in your classes. And there are lots of details you need to consider including exercise cards, tape to mark off boundaries and start/finish lines, costumes in some cases, who the Game Leader and Assistant Game Leaders will be and what their roles are, as well as tips on how to keep score, learning styles and spotting opportunities for extra coaching.
Terry also specifies the Prerequisites and Benefits, the Set-up procedures, a description of how the game is to be played (many with illustrations), Variations, and Coachable Moments during and after the games. This will help the trainer and leaders to match the games to meet the needs and experience of the dogs and their human partners.
You will find as you go through the book that the various games can be used to work on and improve a number of basic behaviors, give dogs the opportunity to become more comfortable being in the presence of other dogs and strangers, and to gain experience working away from their human partners, retrieving a variety of objects and working on nose work skills. And where else can your dog experience the fun of destroying a city as he will in the game Dogzilla Strikes Again. Who says learning cant be fun?
