Weekly Update from Dogwise: Stress and how to deal with it

Dear Dogwise Customer,

The concept of stress as it relates to dogs and other companion (and captive) animals is one that has been attracting the interest of researchers world-wide and there is now a growing body of literature on the subject. While stress can be very broadly defined, what we is focused on is more formally called "distress," a situation in which the dog reacts to his environment in such a way as to place a "damaging excess burden" on himself. This can happen from too much environmental stimulation - or not enough. Think about a dog who gets stressed during the holidays due to lots of people and interesting smells in the house. Or a dog who is getting no positive stimulation from his environment and begins to lick himself constantly - or the gorilla sitting in a zoo enclosure rocking and staring off into space for hours and hours. So when dealing with stress issues, an owner needs to look at the environment and how the dog is reacting to it and then come up with strategies to help the dog deal with it. Here are some books that deal directly or indirectly with stress and how to help your dog better cope with his environment:

  • Stress in Dogs by Martina Scholz and Clarissa von Reinhardt. This is the most complete look at stress and techniques to manage it in pet dogs written for the layperson. Our Book of the Week through December 19th, 25% off at only, $11.21.
  • Environmental Enrichment for Captive Animals by Robert J Young. While this book is focused primarily on zoo environments, much of the information could apply to dogs who are left alone for many hours a day and don't deal with it well. The solution here is the concept of environmental enrichment and how to design and manage programs that relieve boredom and stress.
  • Stress, Anxiety and Aggression in Dogs by Anders Hallgren. By explaining the origins of stress, and its effects on a dog's body, this book helps dog owners tackle the problem. It describes the physiology of stress, and how the brain functions under stress. Using well-founded knowledge for relief and relaxation in dogs, this book describes every possible stress factor and offers practical tips for prevention and relief.
  • Mental Activation - Ways to Stimulate Your Dog's Brain and Avoid Boredom by by Anders Hallgren. Exercises and activity designed to help dogs deal with the stress of boredom.
  • Mind Games for Dogs by Sarah Whitehead. Simple games you can play with your dog - and some he can do on his own - to keep his mind challenged.

We just received our newest cookies in for the Holiday Season: Christmas Cranberry with Cheddar and Mint and Holiday Pumpkin Pie Biscuit with Maple and Cinnamon. These are only available for a limited time.

Newest books & products:
  • What Not to Err: Training Mistakes That Create Headaches for Dogs DVD by Kathy Sdao. There’s no shortage of available dog-training advice. Websites, books, television, dog advocates and well-intentioned friends offer suggestions for basic training and for solving behavior problems. We’ll review ten errors, both general and technical, common to dog-friendly trainers.
  • Bully For You: What to Expect From Bullies and What They Need DVD by Trish King. Breed differences exist, and if you own or are helping with bullies it's good to know what to expect and how to deal with it. Discussion items include excess enthusiasm, greeting behaviors and predatory behavior, and specific techniques for molding your bully into a good citizen.
  • Fear in Dogs: Defining, Understanding, Helping DVD by Trish King. One of the most pervasive behavior problems we face is dealing with dogs that are afraid. They may be fearful of people, of other dogs, and even of objects. There are several ways we can address these issues – all of them require empathy, compassion, and knowledge. Using video and real life examples, we discuss how to help our fearful friends.
