Dogwise Publishing is very pleased to announce the release of Unlocking the Canine Ancestral Diet by Steve Brown (many of you know Steve from his work as a canine nutritionist and co-author of the popular book See Spot Live Longer ). You may have heard about the popular "cave man diet" for humans - the idea that you should only include items in your diet if a cave man could eat it. An oversimplification for sure, but the same principle can be applied to dogs. Research shows that dogs in the wild ate a diet that when compared to most modern dog food was higher in protein, lower in carbohydrates, had a better balance of fats, and included more fresh fruits and vegetables. Sounds like what nutritionists tell us human to eat, right? So how do you accomplish this for dogs? As Steve says, just follow the ABC's:
- Amounts of fat, protein, and carbohydrates should be fed based
on the canine ancestral diet.
- Balance the fats.
- Complete nutrition with fresh foods.
No you don't need to go hunting on the African plains to make this work. Steve provides easy to follow diet plans that you can use. If you just want to supplement what you are currently feeding, Steve provides diet plans to feed your dog once a week taking into consideration what you already feed. Or if you are more ambitious, complete diet plans to feed on a full-time basis. Either way, you will improve your dog's diet. For those of you who really want to learn the science behind this, there are detailed charts and analysis included. But if you just want to know what to feed your dog, you can skip the science and just start feeding the diet that makes the most sense for you and your dog. We think this will be one of the most revolutionary and useful books on canine nutrition that you will ever read!
Our book of the week is Raw Dog Food by Carina MacDonald, offered for the next seven days at a 20% discount - just $10.36 . Carina's book focuses on how to manage a raw food diet and so is a nice complement to the new book by Steve Brown.
Our product feature this week is Steve's Real Food, which Steve Brown developed in 1998. It was the first AAFCO-compliant, frozen, raw meat-based diet. After developing national distribution, Brown left the company to focus on research. You can feed it as a complete meal, add to kibble or use it when it is inconvenient to feed a fresh raw diet, as when travelling or camping. This can be fed as is or re-hydrated. Also makes a great show bait or training treat. A 7 ounce bag is the equivalent of 2 pounds of frozen food. 30 nuggets euqal approx. 2 cups of food.
New this week:

Check this link information on holiday hours and shipping deadlines. In theory we have already passed the deadline for guaranteed arrival by Christmas for ground shipping, but to some extent that is UPS and USPS being cautious. However, orders placed after this weekend - especially for you folks east of the Mississippi River - probably won't make it in time. Folks in the west can cut it closer.
Remember that our Gift Book sale (20% off) lasts until the end of business Monday December 21.
