Weekly Update: How to Foster Dogs by Pat Miller

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Dogwise Publishing is very pleased to announce the release of How to Foster Dogs - From Homeless to Homeward Bound by Pat Miller. If there is anyone qualified to write this book it is Pat who has worked with and for shelters for many years and has fostered lots of dogs. Unlike adopting a dog, agreeing to foster a dog implies that you will care for and provide training for a dog for a limited period of time (yes, we know at least some of you ended up with lifetime dogs this way...). Fostering arrangements run the gamut from formal agreements between you and a shelter or breed rescue group to the more informal "can you let my dog stay with you for three weeks while I'm in Europe" situation. The book focuses more on the formal arrangements where there is an agreement between you and a shelter/breed rescue and covers what you need to know before signing on the dotted line, what your responsibilities may be, and what you can expect in terms of support and even compensation from the organization you work with.

Whether formal or informal, the challenges of fostering a dog are usually pretty significant and you need to know what to expect. Often times the dog in question has behavioral problems, was mistreated in some way by a former owner or has health issues. Many of the dogs are fearful or show some degree of separation anxiety once they arrive in your home. Others were never house-trained, are perceived to be aggressive/reactive, or have not received adequate health care. Learning how to deal with these issues is the focus of the latter half of the book. And then, of course, there is one last problem - how do you handle the situation where you have worked hard to train and care for the dog who is now happily part of your family? How do you say good-bye? Even if it is painful for you, at least you know you have done a world of good for a dog who once really did not have much of a future.

Newest books & products:

  • Collie Psychology: Inside the Border Collie Mind Carol Price. Highly intelligent, strongly motivated, and with a work ethic second to none, this is a dog that will win honors in obedience, agility, working trials and flyball. However, his virtues - being clever, quick-thinking, responsive and driven - can be also his downfall. The collie not only needs to work, he needs an owner prepared to understand him.
  • Champion Disc Dogs! The Ultimate Guide to Getting Your Dog Airborne in 18 Days by Melissa Heeter. Whether you’re a canine agility enthusiast preparing for competition, or simply looking to train your dog in basic retrieval, this book and DVD combination has everything you need! With foolproof instruction from World Champion Disc Dog Competitor Melissa Heeter, you and your dog will build a lasting bond while learning the fundamentals of the Disc Dog sport.
  • Solving Fear and Aggression: Help Your Dog Achieve Its Potential DVD by Sophia Yin. In this fun and fascinating two-day seminar with demonstrations, taught by veterinarian, applied animal behaviorist, and international speaker Dr. Sophia Yin, you’ll learn the science behind how all dogs think and learn, how to recognize early signs of brewing behavior problems, the types of play interactions that can cause friendly dogs to become reactive to others and the basic tried and true approaches to fixing these issues permanently.
