Weekly Update: DWAA Nominees and Happy New Year!

Dear Dogwise Customer,

We are very pleased to announce that the Dog Writer's Association has nominated several books that we published this past year as finalists for awards that will be presented at their annual dinner in February during the Westminster festivities. Just being nominated is a big honor for authors as the books they wrote are not only viewed as interesting and informative, but well written too. So here are the candidates:

  • Encyclopedia of K-9 Terminology by Edward and Patricia Gilbert. This is the most extensive terminology book on dogs ever published and is fast becoming a valued resource for fanciers, breeders, judges and anyone interested in building their knowledge of the world of dogs. Illustrator Dan Sayres has also received a nomination for his work depicting breed expressions in the book.
  • When Your Dog Has Cancer - Making the Right Decisions for You and Your Dog by Lola Ball. How to help owners whose dogs are stricken with cancer with a particular emphasis on cases where the diagnosis is terminal. Hard subject, written with compassion.
  • The Human Half of Dog Training - Collaborating With Clients to Get Results by Risë VanFleet. Trainers must be able to collaborate effectively with their human clients if they want all the hard work they put in training dogs to last. This books shows you how to do just that.
  • AKC STAR Puppy - A Positive Behavioral Approach to Puppy Training by Mary Burch. The official guide to the AKC STAR Puppy program taught by trainers certified to teach the Canine Good Citizen. If you are not a trainer, it can still be used to train your puppy all the necessary good behavior skills. If you are a trainer, its a great way to build your business by offering a program backed by the AKC and providing you with what you need to know to teach what is functionally a prerequisite for CGC.
  • The Business of Dog Walking - How to Make a Living Doing What Your Love by Veronica Boutelle. The founder and owner of dog*tec has written another essential book for people who want to earn a living working with dogs - this time dog walkers. You may think that dog walking is easy, but there is a lot you need to know about dogs, dog behavior as well as smart business practices if you want to earn a good living (and you can!).
  • Canine Cross Training - Building Balance, Strength and Endurance in Your Dog by Sasha Foster. The keys to building fitness in athletes - whether human or canine - are building balance, strength and endurance. As more and more people choose to enter their dogs in canine sports events (from flyball to agility to dock diving - the list is growing), there is a growing realization that fitness is the key to success and the overall health of the dog. This book will guide you to what you need to cross train your dog for whatever sport you want your dog to excel in.
  • The Parker Videos - How One Dog Got Started in K9 Nose Work (DVD) produced by Christy Waehner and the NACSW. One of the most popular and fun new activities for dogs and their owners is K9 Nose Work. This DVD takes footage of Parker, a Doberman, as he learns to use his nose to search for items over a period of time. Includes expert commentary from Ron Gaunt, NACSW co-founder.

Newest books & products:

  • How to Foster Dogs - From Homeless to Homeward Bound by Pat Miller. Fostering dogs involves caring on a temporary basis for puppies and dogs who for whatever reason cannot be housed with their owners, shelters or breed rescue organizations. Many shelters now have formal fostering programs for dogs who are too young, unhealthy or have behavioral issues and therefore have to be housed with a foster family or face euthanasia. The book also covers informal fostering situations when families move or have some disruption and a friend or relative agrees to care for the dog temporarily.
  • Collie Psychology: Inside the Border Collie Mind Carol Price. Highly intelligent, strongly motivated, and with a work ethic second to none, this is a dog that will win honors in obedience, agility, working trials and flyball. However, his virtues - being clever, quick-thinking, responsive and driven - can be also his downfall. The collie not only needs to work, he needs an owner prepared to understand him.
  • Champion Disc Dogs! The Ultimate Guide to Getting Your Dog Airborne in 18 Days by Melissa Heeter. Whether you’re a canine agility enthusiast preparing for competition, or simply looking to train your dog in basic retrieval, this book and DVD combination has everything you need! With foolproof instruction from World Champion Disc Dog Competitor Melissa Heeter, you and your dog will build a lasting bond while learning the fundamentals of the Disc Dog sport.
