Weekly Update: Some of the Best from 2014

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Last week we mentioned three books from Dogwise Publishing that were nominated by the Dog Writer's Association for awards for the year 2014. This week we would like to tip our hats to books from other publishers or were self-published during 2014 that we believe are worthy of awards themselves. While we received lots of good new titles this year, the following are especially noteworthy:

  • Beware the Straw Man by Linda Case. Like she did in Dog Food Logic, Linda explores fact and fiction as it relates to dog behavior and training from a scientific perspective. She provides a perspective that will make you think about the way you evaluate training and behavior theories and methods.
  • On My Mind - Reflection on Animal Behavior and Learning by Karen Pryor. Need we say more?
  • Does My Dog Need Prozac? by Debbie Jacobs. A fresh look at living with shy, anxious, fearful and reactive dogs.
  • Dog Sports Skill, Book 2: Motivation by Denise Fenzi and Deborah Jones. We are so glad that Denise and Deb had the "motivation" to continue on with a second volume to help trainers build their skills to compete in dog sports.
  • Teaching the Reactive Dog Class by Emma Parsons. One of the top sellers at this year's APDT Conference, an invaluable resource for trainers who want to offer classes to help people better understand and train their reactive dogs.
  • Animal Madness by Laurel Braitman. Subtitled "How Anxious Dogs, Compulsive Parrots and Elephants in Recovery Help Us to Understand Ourselves." Another one of the best sellers at APDT, a very interesting read on a fascinating subject. Sale priced at 25% off the suggested retail - only $21.00 subject to stock on hand.
  • Beyond Squeaky Toys by Nicole Nicassio-Hiskey and Cinthia Alia Mitchell. This self-published book looks at how environmental enrichment strategies can help eliminate problem behaviors for both dogs and cats, a subject that has not been dealt with enough outside of academic studies for zoo animals.

We are offering The Genius of Dogs by Brian Hare & Vanessa Woods, one of the best books of 2013 at a special price of $8.50. Hare's stunning discovery is that when dogs domesticated themselves as early as 40,000 years ago they became far more like human infants than their wolf ancestors. Domestication gave dogs a whole new kind of social intelligence. This finding will change the way we think about dogs and dog training—indeed, the revolution has already begun.

We will be closed on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day this week but back in the office on Friday January 2nd.

Newest books & products:

  • Dog Aggression: From Fearful, Reactive and Hyperactive to Focused, Happy and Calm DVD by Sophia Yin. Fearful, aggressive, reactive, unruly, or just too rambunctious— does this describe your dog? You may know many techniques for dealing with your reactive or aggressive dog, but with many dogs, to get the results you want you need a clear step-by-step plan.
  • Puppy Potty Training: The Expert's Guide to Easy Housetraining Fast by Caryl Wolff. Have you done *everything* and your puppy still isn’t potty trained? Are you frustrated that your puppy still has accidents? Is your puppy toileting in his crate? Are you about to get a puppy and want to know the right way to potty train beforehand? This easy-to-read humorous book guides you every step of the way and shows you an easy, fail-safe method for potty training your puppy.
  • Brain Games for Puppies by Claire Arrowsmith. Brain Games for Puppies is about more than just fun ways to play with a puppy. Animal behaviorist Claire Arrowsmith explains how mental challenges help to build a strong bond between a dog and its owner and prevent future behavioral problems. Playing games that use reward-based teaching methods provides motivation and establishes trust.

Happy New Year to all from those of us here at Dogwise!
