Expanded Description:
Norwegian dog trainer Turid Rugaas is a noted expert on canine body language, notably “calming signals” which are signals dogs give other dogs and humans that denote stress. These are dogs’ attempt to defuse situations that otherwise might result in fights or aggression. The DVD shows footage of many calming signals, how dogs use them, and how you can use them to calm your dog.
This is the DVD format and companion to the popular book, "On Talking Terms with Dogs." Note - this is not a professionally filmed DVD rather one done by dedicated amateur dog people; however, it does a good job of illustrating the canine body language subjects it addresses.

Wonderful, and wonderfully informative., March 21, 2010
Reviewer: Kate C
I purchase any new dog behaviour book or DVD with hesitation, and watch with a good deal of sceptisim, as there is so much nonsense out there. I have been studying animal behaviour for years and have shared my home with many different dogs, and to me, a lot of what the supposed 'expert' trainers say is clearly rubbish. This DVD, however, is wonderful. It shows and explains much about canine signals and communication - there were some things I knew, or had guessed, but, despite all my years observing dogs, I learnt quite a lot from this DVD.
Yes, the video quality could be better. However, looking at the date stamps on many clips, it appears to have been filmed in the early 90's, which would explain that. I actually prefer this, and have not deducted any stars, for one reason: There are some dogs in the film in quite stressful situations (the only thing that did make me feel quite uncomfortable while watching). This shows the signs dogs give when they are stressed or scared - this is useful to show, because many people do not notice these and the dog ends up having to 'shout' (barking or even biting). I am very happy to watch a lower quality video from some years ago, rather than have more dogs put into uncomfortable situations just so that humans can watch something in high-definition. There would be no point to that - this is a fantastic educational video just as it is.
This is definitely a DVD I would recommend to the experienced trainer, behaviour consultant, and owner, and also to the person who is new to dogs. It is a great step forward in our understanding of doggy language and ability to communicate with dogs in a kind and respectful manner. Thank you, Turid Rugaas. |

It's good information but the video is poor qualit, March 21, 2009

The video has very good information, however, it is hard to understand what she is saying plus there is allot of background noise. The video is good to watch after you read the book so you understand what you are seeing.
