Expanded Description:

As the more than 65 million dog owners in America will attest, there's something about the presence of a dog that inspires confidence, nurtures emotional well-being, and brings out the best in ourselves. But for some people, the presence of a dog can do even more.

Written by the leading expert in an emerging new field of therapy, Jane Miller, LISW, CDBC, is a clinical psychotherapist and licensed independent social worker. She has worked with National Education for Assistance Dog Services and the Canines for Combat Veterans program for soldiers returning from combat with post-traumatic stress. Miller has appeared in the PBS program, Health Visions: Animals As Healers.

"Healing Companions" is the first book to detail how dogs are increasingly benefiting those who suffer from a range of emotional ills, from eating disorders and anxiety to agoraphobia, depression, and post-traumatic stress.

"Healing Companions" will teach you:

* What criteria to consider when choosing the right dog for you.
* What kind of training service dogs require.
* What to expect and how to respond when you take a service dog out in public.
* How a dog can compliment other forms of therapy.
* How to navigate the procedural regulations that apply to a service dog and much more.
This book should be required reading for everybody who is considering getting a psychiatric service dog or is working on training them. --Temple Grandin, Animals in Translation and Animals Make Us Human.

Healing Companions offers us a practical, heartwarming, intelligent, hopeful window into a new field for service dogs (PSDs). Read this book, learn about and share these benefits with others, so that our kindred spirits can help more people heal from the challenges of our fast-paced, stressed, 21st-century lives! --Allen M. Schoen, MS, DVM, author of Kindred Spirits

Finally, someone has written about the best-kept mental health secret: how dogs save psyches, hearts, minds, and sometimes, quite literally, lives...--Belleruth Naparstek, LISW, author of Invisible Heroes

I adored this book. It provided me with all kinds of information and resources that I wouldn't have been able to find anywhere else. This book is what started me off with the information I needed to begin training my own assistance dog.

Great book on psychiatric service dogs, February 25, 2010
Reviewer: AiredaleLady
In Healing Companions, Jane Miller has written a book that helps all of us understand the important work that psychiatric service dogs do. This book is an excellent guidebook for families and friends of individuals suffering from chronic mental illness, and it reminds all of us of the important connection we can all enjoy with dogs.
Many have written on the versatility of dogs and all the work they have done for humans over thousands of years. Miller is a psychotherapist and a clinical social worker, and she adds a new chapter to this literature. In her book, she cites many cases in which troubled patients have found help and relief first by interacting with her therapy dog and later by finding a dog of their own. Miller writes that she realized the role a dog could play in this area when she realized the steadying influence her own dog had on her patients. From an incest survivor to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder veterans, Miller's book details how Psychiatric Service Dogs make life manageable and enjoyable for patients, families, and friends.
In more than 100 pages of appendixes, Miller provides useful and detailed information to help people select the right dog, understand its needs, strengths, and weaknesses, and how to help the dog cope with stress. She also discusses when and how to retire a service dog.

Fascinating and educational, February 15, 2010
Reviewer: Dr. Nancy Kay, author of Speaking for Spot
We are so fortunate that a dog named Umaya happened to cross paths with this author. Otherwise, we may not have been fortunate enough to be the recipients of this incredible book. Not only does the author explore the depths of the human animal bond in a unique and wonderful way, she also teaches us a great deal about mental illness and the benefits of canine therapy. One need not love dogs for this book to have significant meaning for each and every one of us. All of our lives are touched by mental illness, either through our own struggles or those of a loved one. Kudos to this author for such an inspirational book.
